Personal history
Fleeing the aftermath of the Spellplague, his parents found their way to the town of Galdel. His parents being traders found a place quickly in the mercantile nature of the city. Soon after arriving and settling down they realized they were soon expecting a child among them. From a young age they realized that their son Mason had a gifted mind for invention. Shying away from the trinkets and baubles commonly made from the precious metals the city was known for, he preferred more practical creations made of wood, iron, and steel. Yearning to venture beyond the city walls the ruined countryside called out to him for a life of adventure, but his parents were too afraid of the dangers natural and otherwise to be found in the wilds. He was confined to the safety of the city and it's guard for now. Nearing his eighteenth birthday he decided that the calm city life wasn't for him and that as soon as he could he would take the first ship out of the city to the Sword Coast. However, fate had a different plan instore for Mason. As they passed from the lake to The Great Ocean, the ship was set upon by pirates of The Five Companies. The Captain, A drow by the name of Nareth Imyzar, explained their plight of the dwindling numbers in the crew and gave the survivors a choice, join or die. Seeing that a man of his talents had a great future among the pirates, Mason jumped at the opportunity to join the crew. Quickly proving his worth, He earned the crews trust and loyalty by reinforcing hulls and augmenting cannons. His ability to infuse mundane objects with magic was unparalleled in their ranks. For the next five years, He and his crew ruled the waves plundering merchant ships, smuggling, and all things in between drawing the line only at murder. However Captain Nareth, the captain of the "North Star" and a minor captain in the employ of Company Flurrig, had ambitions far outweighing his station. With less advancement then he anticipated over half a decade, he turned to darker forces in order to continue his ascent. Off of a small island in the Shipgrave Isles with no moon to light the sea, the ship sat in darkness only matched by the silence of the night. Most of the crew had been ordered ashore, leaving Mason alone with the rest of the officers and inner circle. After what felt like hours, the captain finally returned and led the rest of the crew inland. What awaited them on that island was nothing short of a nightmare. The men had been torn apart and cut down where they stood. Standing amongst the gore and carnage was a lone figure coated in death with blood streaming from his mouth. The crew had been fed to a vampire by the captain in return for power. Some of them stood frozen in terror, others tried but were powerless to fight back. One by one the members of the circle were attacked and assumed they would meet the same fate as the others, but Nareth had a different plan. Each of the officers were to be made into hideous vampire spawn under the control of the newfound traitor and child of the night. The last thing he remembered from that night was having the life drained from him and falling unconscious, but he would find out soon enough that he only lived due to the untimely arrival of a band of Knights of The Sacred Flame. Cutting down the vampires, arresting unturned survivors, and putting down those that were transforming they cleared the island of its inhabitants. Assumed dead, and left for it Mason was changed, but not fully. When he arose, the bodies were burned beyond recognition. Were they the bodies of the former crew turned undead? Were they the original vampire and his minions? Was the captain among them or did he flee into the safety of the night? Only time would tell, but he needed to return to the mainland and figure out a plan. Repairing the wreckage of a small skiff he managed to return to Halruaa in one piece. (This next part depends on the level we start at and if I already have my subclass: Arriving on the continent once again, he salvaged the makeshift raft he created he turned the broken vessel and other scrap he had lying around into his most loyal and capable creation yet, The Shark Hound he calls Bait. A monster with the ferocity and aggression of a great white mixed with the mobility and loyalty of a dog, this faithful companion resembles a medium sized shark with four canine legs.) With his crew taken, his back thoroughly stabbed, and only revenge on his mind he quickly conceived a plan. He would find out whatever he could about the events that transpired and have his revenge. But for that he needed a ship and a crew, both requiring a small fortune. No ordinary ship would do though. He needed something that would all but guarantee his victory. Everyone knows of the Five Companies legendary airships, but few know where they originally came from. Somewhere within that ruined city the plans must lie and wait for the next master craftsman to find and use once again. Both his blueprints and gold would come from the same place... Halarrah!
