Rasmus was a wreckless boy when he was a youngling. He always breaks property and finds himself in places he shouldn't be. Although he found himself in trouble, he spent his childhood finding ways to get away with it. He found ways to fabricate stories based on what he saw during his adventures, and he was able to provide alibis using them. He got so good at deceiving others that he picked up tricks to make his surroundings correlate to his alibis, along with picking up people’s behavior and tailoring his stories favoring them.
Being in a school prominently human and half-elf, he was often bullied for being among the few Kobolds in his class. His parents, however, were respected as they served in the Adventurers Guild, retiring after Rasmus started attending Edrahil College of Adventure. Although older generations respected the family, the current generation doesn’t, as it’s racially motivated due to the rising population of Kobolds. Being called, ‘The Rat of the Road,’ Rasmus had little to no friends, with all of his classmates mocking him for trying to be an adventurer.
His greatest bully, Rouf Splendid, was his nemesis. He constantly hindered Rasmus’s studies. He would erase Rasmus’s name on exams after turning it in, misplace his satchel, and convince their professor that he cheated in prior exams. He was already a miscreant at a younger age, but now, he decided to take it to the next level.
Perchance, Rasmus taking on the noble route of becoming a part of the Adventurers Guild was not within the realm of his interest. He was already a devious boy, although with no intent to be evil, his sense of justice is severely off-scale. Maybe pursuing education at Edrahil never benefitted him, and he was already good at getting away with his shenanigans, so why not take advantage of that? While finding ways to pay off his student debt, he decided to fence some goods he unlawfully commandeered. There were close to no times he was about to get caught as he never failed at explaining how he got them. Of course, business was booming, so he had to increase his stock. Naturally, he tried flipping cheap goods from sketchy merchants stationed near the Colosseum, but after he and other thieves were gaining notoriety, he decided to help his competition get caught. Anonymously, he helped the local guards identify a few thieves. He was able to identify them and how they got their merchandise by identifying common routes for legitimate traders and keying out details on the thieves being nearby them. Easily, he helped catch a good chunk of his competition and also blamed them for causing damage to his booth, convincing the guard to provide hazard pay.
One of the organizers of the Grand Colosseum reached out to Rasmus hearing about his stellar detective work. They want to figure out why the revenue from the arena is lower than usual. They hired him as a contractor to figure out if there was a culprit considering how he managed to identify plenty of thieves. This is an opportunity he can't deny, so of course, he accepted. He figured out the security box held at the Banking Guild was compromised, which led to suspecting some of the managers. It led to one manager who was the father of a familiar face, the bully himself, Rouf. Turns out, Rouf cloned his dad’s keys forged revenue documents, and skimmed some of the money generated from all arena events. His employer wanted to keep this ordeal a secret as he would surely get fired for not noticing this sooner, but because of this, he resorted to taking Rouf in without proper evidence.
The higher-ups interrogated Rouf, mentioning the ledger and the Banking Guild. Since Rasmus’s employer kept his involvement a secret, they never heard of him until Rouf mentioned his name. Rouf expressed his rivalry with Rasmus, but he framed Rasmus by claiming he was the inside man, revealing Rasmus knew about the situation. They were convinced, and his only saving grace was to reveal his involvement. His employer warned him and told him to stay quiet and debated whether or not they should reveal everything. However, Rasmus reached out and confirmed he knew everything.
“I knew everything from the start, it was me that gave that anonymous tip. Truth is, I wanted Rouf gone. I understand it doesn’t make sense that I somehow knew everything, but allow me to explain. I saw him, but he never saw me. I can see things no one else can. Truth is, I am capable of reading minds, and I can envision prophecies. This… is only one of them.”
The higher-ups thought his monologue was diabolically ridiculous, however, he made it seem plausible. It explained how he helped the guard catch a series of thieves. He let him go but made a promise to him. If they ever find out that this is a lie, they will publicly execute him in the arena.
Surely, this whole interaction made him rethink how he approached his cons. There's no way he can maintain the ruse that he is a mind reader and a small-time prophet. Surely he won’t be able to exploit that reputation to his advantage. Would he?
