Born to single mother, Tabitha Silverfond, Matthais Silverfond didn't have a very easy childhood. Being a rather "loose" tavern girl, Matt grew up never knowing his father (who was a visiting fisherman on shore leave who took advantage of Tabitha's "services" when she was only 14).
 
As the eldest and only male in his family, Matt had a lot of responsibility looking after his four younger sisters while his mother continued her "serving" profession. During their childhood years, Matt and his sisters Megara, Claire, Alyss, and Dauphine had to take to the streets since their mother didn't bring home enough pay to properly raise her five children. And being estranged from her noble parents and younger sister, Tabitha received no familial assistance.
 
During Matt's eleventh year, Shelby, the wife of the owner of the local Hoss Family Farm discovered the Silverfond children begging while she was out shopping for a new dress for her daughter, Damia. She employed Matt and his sister Meg (who was one year younger than he) on the spot to be an orchard hand and house servant, respectively. The other three sisters were left behind due to their young age. Before leaving Matt made Shelby promise to send all of his earnings back to his childhood home so his family could be properly cared for.
 
Matt's daily wages depended on the amount of bushels he was able to pick throughout the day. Though young, he was a very hard worker and by the age of fifteen he was promoted to farmhand, assisting with the feeding and general care of the animals. During the entirety of his stay, Matthais slept in the barn, never complaining about his living arrangements out of sheer gratitude. Food was provided for him; prepared and brought to him by his servant sister. Her life as a house servant was a busy one, and the two siblings cherished the short time they were able to spend together whenever she stopped by to deliver Matt his meals. Since she was taught to read and write by the Hoss family so she could further assist with household needs, Meg assisted Matt with writing letters to send back home once a month when they sent their earnings to their mother and sisters.
 
Over the years Matt and Damia, the daughter of the farm owners, grew very close. So much so that at the age of nineteen Matt asked for her hand in marriage. Since Shelby and her husband Benjamin favored Matthais, they gave the couple their blessing. Following the marriage the two decided to move away from the farm to a nearby cottage on the countryside and the Hoss' hired a new farmhand to replace Matt.
 
Back at the Silverfond residence, between Claire and Dauphine working with their mother at the tavern and Alyss becoming a seamstress, things began to look up and Matt no longer needed to worry about financially taking care of his mother and sisters. And even though Damia and Matt no longer lived on the farm, Benjamin and Shelby Hoss made sure the two newlyweds were well taken care of.
 
Like Matt and Meg did for their mother, Damia's doting parents sent them monthly payments so they could live as comfortably as possible. And to add to their joyous lives, three years into their marriage Damia gave birth to a baby boy named Greggory. After never having the experience of having a father figure in his life, Matthais was filled with pride to fill this new roll in life.
 
Life was rather uneventful for a while. The three lived in complete happiness. Here and there they would visit and receive visits from their families. Meg remained at the Hoss Family Farm and eventually their mother retired from her serving job at the tavern while Claire and Dauphine continued working there. Alyss eventually drifted from the family, marrying and moving her self owned sewing business, her husband, and daughter away from Summervale.
 
After a few quiet years a tragic event came to pass. A fire broke out at the Hoss Family Farmhouse and Damia's parents passed away in the conflagration. This was known due to their bodies being recovered in the wreckage. Meg and the replacement farmhand however, were nowhere to be found. With the Hoss' gone, money immediately became an issue Matt's little family.
 
After a short period of mourning, Matt began to seek out a new job on another farm; sticking to the only skills he had in life. He implored that his wife stayed home with their son so he could have a proper upbringing, scarred by the memories of his own rough and rugged childhood. Again he planned to send money back home, stepping back into the shoes of a family caretaker.
 
While looking for job postings in the marketplace, Matt saw a particularly attractive advertisement for a mercenary position. Compared to what he was used to, the pay seemed too good to be true. At the time he knew little to nothing about about what exactly a mercenary did, so he asked around until he learned about the man who put up the poster. Once he found the man he was turned down, obviously not skilled enough for what was needed. Additionally he was pointed in the direction of the local mercenary guild where he was given the opportunity to learn more about the profession.
 
Filled with determination he began to train with the guild while also working a job cleaning the guild hall. At first the pay was disappointing, though this was to be expected starting off in a lowly janitorial position. Though after a few long years he was given the opportunity to hang up his mop and finally pick up a sword and begin his life as a full time mercenary.
