Vayl was a changeling raised by surrogate parents. Chosen by their changeling clan to receive an immaculate upbringing as a result of the innate and seemingly untameable power that consumed them from the moment of their birth. On the evening that Vayl took their first breath, the moon was full, peering in through the window of the home of two changeling parents it was told that the moonbeams that spilled into the small home were swallowed up by the small body of the child that then continued to glow without aid. This luminous symbol indicated the gifts that Vayl had received.
The council of changelings, living in secret among the population, decided that such a child should receive all support that the colony could provide. This would establish the fate touched individual as a high ranking changeling, seamlessly grown within society and completely controlled by the colony. Thus it was decided that Vayl would be raised by a high ranking human family which had been desiring another child but were unable to produce one.
In this way Vayl’s life began, they were raised under the guise of being a human girl, their true identity covered by colony magic until the importance of holding form could be understood to the point that they could conceal themself. Given as much magic guidance and tutoring as possible, Vayl worked to hone her innate talent into a controllable skill for all of their young life.
As Vayl grew and learned it seemed as though they were losing more control of their powers than they were gaining, endless nights of study and practice yielded little success and negligible improvement. Frustrated with the turnout of the prospect that the council had invested so much effort into, they ceased to provide support for Vayl’s education and their similarly disappointed adoptive family, also discontinuing future lessons.
This discontinuation had positive and negative effects as the newfound freedom at the age of 18 allowed Vayl to enter the world and experience life, a constant cloud of unsureness and self-loathing hangs over them as they feel they will never reach their true potential.
Through adventuring and enjoying the life of a duplicitous charlatan they learned to cover this feeling so as to not disturb party members, acquaintances and clients. They still find themself not getting close to others quickly. This is impounded upon by the negative receptions that changelings seem to have in public.
