Master Hunter and Blood Mage

Skallagrim, son of Kveldulf (or Skallagrim Kveldulfsson in mornmål), was born in the tribe of Bornheim. It’s a ruthless and unforgiving tribe, dedicated to the spirit of the bear. In this tribe where only the strong survive, Skallagrim was unfortunate enough to be born as a small and sickly child. His life was not made easier by the fact that his father Kveldulf was originally an exile from the Varndur tribe. Skallagrim was handed a tough start by the gods. He never got to join his siblings to play, always had to do the worst chores and always had to eat last, which more often than not left him with nothing but scraps.
 
There was, however, one light in his bleak and dark upbringing. His one friend in this cruel world. One day when Skallagrim was cleaning the latrine, his older brothers pushed him into the piles of feces. The boys then laughed as the smell made their younger brother vomit. He got up and ran to the river to clean himself of the filth. All the while he cried as he rid himself of the smell. Then he heard a voice. A friendly voice that asked him what had happened. When he looked up he saw a boy his own age with a spear in hand. The boy was large, with broad shoulders that were covered by the fur of a bear and muscular arms that were twice the size of Skallagrim’s. The boy, who was named Arnheim, helped him up as he explained what had happened. The two walked together back to the village.
 
The next day when Skallagrim was doing his chores, he was suddenly interrupted by the screaming and gagging of his older brothers. When he turned around to see what was going on he saw the two older boys covered in shit, vomiting and crying. Behind them was Arnheim with a big smile on his face. From that day on the two were best friends. Their friendship became even stronger after Skallagrim had aided Arnheim in finding a special herb for Arnheim’s sister who had gotten sick. The herb saved her life. That night the two met by the river and swore an oath. They cut their wrists and tasted each others blood. They became blood brothers.
 
As they grew up Arnheim became one of the strongest warriors in the tribe, whilst Skallagrim barely managed to keep up with other warriors. The only thing he excelled in was archery, but given that it was viewed among the other young warriors as a coward's weapon it didn’t help much. The mere reason that he had even survived this long was the fact that everyone knew about his and Arnheim’s friendship. And no one dared to cross Arnheim.
 
One fateful day Arnheim discovered that he had a magical gift in his blood that allowed to do incredible things. This powerful bloodline pushed him to become the most powerful young warrior in the tribe. Skallagrim who was already somewhat jealous of his blood brother, was now distraught. How come he had all the spirit’s gifts and favor. That night he went down to the river where the two had performed the blood ritual so long ago. He was angry. They had shared blood with each other. Some of Arnheim’s power must have transferred to him. Skallagrim took out a knife and cut himself in the wrist. The pain was overwhelming, but it didn’t matter. He dug around inside of his own arm with knife, searching for any form of power. Anything that could make him strong. The blood gushed out of his arm and down into the river, which turned red as it streamed down and away from the village. Skallagrim became nauseous, but kept going. There had to be something in there. In the end he pulled knife out and screamed. He then plunged it into the river. To his surprise the river froze around his weapon. As he pulled it up a large block of ice now flowed with the stream away from him. He looked at his knife and saw how a thick magical mist floated from the blade. He had found his power. A power that he would perfect and study until he had mastered it completely. A power that he knew would give him the potential to not only rival his blood brother, but maybe even surpass him. The power of Blood Magic.
 
He spent the following years studying this forbidden art. Although he became mistrusted by the tribe for his mystical practises, he kept going. After years of studying he found the ancient secret of the Hunters Bane. An ancient ritual that enhanced his hunting prowess, but forever changed him, turning him into a Blood Hunter.
