Entering the Book

We entered the book. I didn't want to leave Sarai. Not again, not after what she had been through. My thoughts are dark as I pondered our course of action. This was the only way out, and thus the only way back to her. I don't know what kind of power is to...

"That fateful, glorious, or unfortunate day (depending on your point of view) started like many of the previous mornings had for me. I woke up cold and alone on the hard ground, grateful for the early spring warm sun that was just visible between the trees. It was not as cold as it had been and for that, this desert traveler was grateful. My mission up to this point had not been very successful. I had passed through many villages doing minor healings and defeating the occasional brigand but nothing of real value or consequence. I had lost my purpose. What had happened back home weighed heavy on me, and while I never doubted Celestia or her goodness I was beginning to doubt myself. What was I doing here? I had just finished rolling up my blankets and kicking my small fire out when I first heard the cry for help. It was coming from the woods off to my left and it sounded terrible. Some creature was running for his life. I grabbed my shield and spear, pulled my shufa over my nose, and ran off to find what was going on. Maybe I could spread a little light on this day. I entered the wooded glen from the south and the strangest sight I had ever seen greeted me. A completely hairless man was laying unconscious under a log on the west side of the glen, a Githyanki with his eyes closed playing a guitar extremely discordantly sitting on the log. A small man dressed as a monk running right at me from the north, followed closely by a large group of rough brigands wielding everything from clubs to billhooks. From the east side of the small glen a trio appeared and I quickly deduced they had heard the cries for help and were running to aid as well. They might have been the oddest bunch of beings I had ever encountered. An unnaturally beautiful Satyr, a tall woodsman with red hair and beard that hadn’t seen a comb in a few days, and the strangest thing, a 7 foot tall dragonborn with an axe bigger than I was wielded in just one of his great hands. I yelled “save the monk” and as I a ran at him he looked at me and then fainted. I charged into the brigands and ran my spear under his upraised arms that held a club. My spear entered between his ribs and he fell without a sound. I spun quickly and deflected a thrust from a billhook with my shield and counter thrusted into another brigands throat. The fight lasted all of 10 seconds. I looked around and saw that the Githyanki was playing his discordant notes faster as if he was playing a chaos battle tune. His eyes were still closed and he swayed as if…..as if stoned. I saw the bald man had awoken and was drunkenly beating the shit out of one of the brigands. The human woodsman had beheaded one and was running another through as I looked up. The Dragonborn had left a wake of bodies in his path and had split one from top to bottom as easy as if he had sliced a pita to fill with spiced meat or jelly. Ten of the brigands were dead on the ground and the remaining 10 or so were peeing themselves as the ran back to where they came. 10 seconds. This was as swift and brutal a surprise attack as I had witnessed in a long time. An extremely unfortunate set of events and timing for these brigands. Their prey almost within their reach had been snatched from them at great cost by a set of random strangers. How unfortunate indeed. I slowly looked around the glen at the group around me. They all met my eye. The completely hairless man with a glassy stare, the guitarist, who had now stopped playing, met my eyes with his own glassy even stare. The woodsmen had a fiery look in his eye and an almost challenge there, like he dared me to question his bravery, but there was something else……The dragonborn looked with bored interest. He knew he could probably chew me up and spit me out. The satyr was met my eyes with keen measurement. As if taking my stock but not arriving at any conclusions yet. I recognized something in each of their eyes. They, like me, were looking for something more. Maybe I had finally found my purpose. Maybe I was sent here not to bring light to dark kingdoms, but to just bring light to these five seekers…… I pulled my shufa down from covering my nose and mouth and smiled broadly. “Well met my friends. Would you like to join me for coffee while we revive this poor monk?”
