On his way to work one morning in Reverie of 989, Paladin Constable Rodrigo del Rey discovered a basket waiting for him on his front step. While this was not in and of itself much of a surprise -- locals would often do just this, as a comment on his service. Sometimes, the baskets contained muffins. Other times, apples. Occasionally, when he had had to enforce unpopular policies, the basket contained horse apples.
 
That day, it bore a perfect, contented, blue-eyed baby girl, days old. It was love at first sight.
 
Perhaps it was that he thought to keep the girl until he could find her parents and talk to them, to find out why they had abandoned her here. Perhaps his heart couldn't bear the thought of her as part of the system. Whatever it was, Rodrigo made a decision that day which would affect his life forever after, and took her in.
