Personal history
Gnarl was born to the gnoll warband known as the "Black Tide", which had long ago split away from the control of Yeenoghu. The runt of his litter, it was discovered early that some sort of magic had effected his body and mind. He had a much deeper curiosity than his kin, as well as a natural affinity for magic. At first, his parents ignored his strange ways, but once he had learned how to read and write they could no longer ignore his capabilities. Seeing an opportunity to gain a foothold in the civilized world, the leader of the Black Tide instructed Gnarl to go into the world and learn what he could from the humans. With the help of a circlet that altered his appearance, Gnarl took a fabricated name and became known as Quincy Q. Quartermain.
For three years, he managed to carve out a decent living in Craigenlore. It was during this time that he made friends with a human named Desmond whom he worked with in attempt to establish himself as a fur trader. For a while, it seemed things were going well, and he had even managed to catch the eye of a teifling woman named Roxanne (at the chagrin of her father). Things fell apart, however, when a rival trader managed to completely put him out of business. Quincy chose to cut his losses and leave town.
His return this his warband was met with mixed reactions. During his leave, it seemed that another equally gifted gnoll named Gnash had been discovered, though Quincy's newly gained skills greatly outclassed Gnash. This caused Gnash to become both bitter and competitive, trying at every turn to best Quincy in whatever he did. However, not long after his return, the leader once again instructed Quincy to go back out into the world. This time, he sought to enroll the gifted young pup into the Jade Academy.
Unable to hide his true form, Quincy was forced to try and appeal to the Arch Mage to allow him into one of the towers. It took a short amount of time, but after writing a stirring essay that proved him to be civilized, the archmage finally allowed him to join under strict watch. Two years were spent rigorously studying and enduring harsh scrutiny from his peers, but eventually Quincy was able to prove himself both trustworthy and competent.
