Appearance

Physical Description

Custoa has the build of a swimmer; slender but with strong back muscles and some muscle on her arms and legs. She is mostly known for being flexible and quick-footed.

Body Features

Custoa has many aquatic features; her skin has a texture comparable to that of a shark or a ray, she has gills running parallel to her ribs, and her ears, fingers and toes have translucent webbing.

Facial Features

Her face is oval-shaped. She has violet eyes with oddly shaped pupils, reminiscent of what one might see in a cuttlefish's eyes. Her hair is long and a deep, dark shade of blue. It is usually braided with some strands loose to frame her face.
She has a "Sannish stain" on the corner of her lip from her brief dependency on the drug Sannish, used to help her deal with the pain of ingesting the poison of a green dragon.

Identifying Characteristics

She has a tattoo of a seahorse in bioluminescent ink on the back of her left arm, and another tattoo on her chest featuring the crimes she was arrested for in Verough, which each crime depicted in thievescant.

Apparel & Accessories

Her outfits are typical of that of a sailor. Her signature outfit features an off-white peasant shirt, beige working pants, knee-high boots, and a purple corset.
She always wears two necklaces; one with a circular amethyst pendant and the other with a rectangular lapis lazuli pendant.

Special abilities

As a triton she has a small amount of control over the elements of water and air; she can cast the spells "Fog Cloud", "Gust of Wind", and "Wall of Water" once a day.
She is also able to breathe underwater and move underwater with ease, and can communicate with sea-dwelling creatures in a series of whistles and squeaks comparable to the sounds dolphins make.

Mentality

Personal history

Custoa was born in the Red Reef Sanctuary in the Astrifer Sea. Her father was Captain Oceanus Aquaria, the captain of the sanctuary's Royal Guard. Her mother, Coralai, hailed from a family of respected hippocamp breeders. As the story goes, Oceanus wanted a son to inherit his position as guard captain, but the moment he held his daughter for the first time he fell in love with her.
 
When Custoa was seven years old, her mother succumbed to illness. To keep her mother's memory alive, she fostered an interest in the surface world. This carried into adulthood, where she asked her father to explore the surface when she came of age at 15.
 
Her introduction to the surface was a turbulent one; she was washed up in a tempest and crashed into the shore of a seaside town. Luckily, she was rescued by a tavernkeeper who nursed her back to health. As soon as she recovered, she searched for a job opportunity. A group of sailors were looking for a new navigator, and they hired her.
 
Five years into working with her crew, they were pursued by a band of pirates and overwhelmed. An older pirate was outraged by Custoa's presence on board and tried to attack her with his sword, but he was stopped by a fellow crewmate who reminded him of the captain's orders to kill no one. It escalated to the man stepping in front of Custoa to block the blade with his own sword. Invigorated by this selfless act, Custoa and her crew defeated the pirates and threw the older sailor overboard. The brave sailor, who introduced himself as Malachi, would eventually become Custoa's lover.

Education

Custoa was educated by her parents and by a variety of teachers in the Red Reef Sanctuary. She learned how to survive in the ocean, how to respect the home in which she was born, and how to fight fiercely.
On the surface, she learned how to navigate the seas using the stars and about the customs of the many cultures on the surface.

Employment

Custoa is the navigator on a crew of sailors.

Failures & Embarrassments

She is embarrassed by the fact she fell for Cenekus' mortal disguise Levena. This allowed her to be lured into a trap where she was kissed and poisoned by the dragon.

Mental Trauma

As the result of watching her mother slowly succumb to a serious illness, Custoa is afraid of contracting and wasting away to a similar malady. This nightmare was unfortunately made into reality when she was poisoned by the dragon Cenekus and she suffered for a period of several days.

She enjoys seafood of all sorts, as her diet prior to life on the surface was entirely seafood. She is also a fan of alcohol, particularly ale and pale rum.

Custoa is in a long-term but open-ended relationship with a human sailor named Malachi Savage. She has only recently decided, after the traumas from being seduced and poisoned by Cenekus, that she wants to devote herself entirely to Malachi.

Religious Views

While Custoa does not worship any particular god, she does understand the role the gods play in the world and respects them. She also continues to hold the beliefs of her people regarding the ocean and how sacred it is.
When she dies, she wants to be buried in the ocean beside her mother's grave in the Red Reef Sanctuary so as to feed the reefs and give back to the oceans that bore her.
