Personal history

Hazel Hazel is a (presumed) orphan from the edge of the dead south. She was found, a child barely old enough to open her eyes, not too far from the edge of where the hell-maw that devoured Wetumpka, and taken out of there by those fleeing the destruction.

Raised in a Catholic Our Lady of Mercy orphanage until she was seven and then sent on one of the so called 'Orphan Trains' further west. From there she was picked up by a few families who would either put so much work (in the opinion of a child) on her she would run away, or she would cause so much trouble they'd just put her back on the next Orphan Train further west.

Eventually she grew too old to even be picked at all from the shuffling scramble for the younger, more impressionable children (and being small and scrawny usually foster parents were looking for hardy farmhands from the older children), and she just ended up drifting around central Texas for a while, being a minor irritant to communities and farmsteads she would beg, busk, and steal to survive.

As she was busking in a larger town she managed to attract the attention of a travelling show and players, and traveled with them for a while. She was one of a few doing music for, or singing backup or choir for their stars and starlets, as well as small roles in various stageplays they performed. The 'good' life from that was somewhat shortlived though, as eventually a lawman recognized her during one of her roles from her slightly earlier years of more prolific thievery, and drove her and in his over-zealousness the entire show out of town, with the travelling show choosing to 'part ways' with her after that.
