Mentality

Personal history

As they grew up, Faeheim was all they knew. There was no Yvirheim, no Shadowfell, no other plane of any kind. All they knew was that their home was all there was. There was, to their knowledge, nothing outside their colony of Mellisan. It took a falling out with their parents and a juvenile episode of running away from home to discover that life existed off the top of the plateau their family claimed. That lone bird flying over the trees that peppered the land below was all it took to convince them that they had been lied to for over a century. All they knew is that they didn't want anything to do with what their family had fabricated. For so long had they felt pigeonholed, trapped in this place without even imagining a chance to see what was beyond the steep dropoffs that surrounded the colony on all sides. When they jumped down into the trees, they didn't quite know what to expect. Whatever awaited them when they landed, it would most definitely be the other side of something; of life, or of containment. Surely either would be better for them than remaining holed up in Mellisan for who knows how long.
 
 
They woke up to the faint sound of buzzing and the feeling of immediate regret. This regret quickly turned into confusion and fear when they realized that not only were there no trees in sight around them across the rolling plains they woke up within, but the plateau their family claimed was nowhere to be seen. They barely knew how to cook, how to defend themself, let alone did they fully understood who or what they were; especially after seeing what all new kinds of life there was. The strange streaks across their hand wasn't helping either, seeing as it seemed to stain the ground with some kind of ash as they removed it from the earth. These marks would leave a similar effect on whatever living thing they touched, and they only seemed to grow with each incident. It was quick for them to realize that all which mattered anymore was for this strange new magic to not harm anything or anyone, so long as they could help it.
 
 
They soon grew to miss what of their family colony provided any savory memories, aside from the obvious hindsight of how it was all to keep them confined. They grew to miss the good times when things were so much simpler instead of how suddenly they had to grow up and be on their own, and not even for just their own sake alone. This was made worse with the realization that this strange afflicion prevented any kind of physical interaction. Eventually, they started wearing wrappings over the stained parts of their body, which had over time spread further up each arm and even had appeared on their legs; moreso as a precaution in case they had ever slipped up on the responsibility of keeping this curse contained. However, their struggles only grew more troublesome, realizing that not only did they struggle to keep the wrappings in good enough condition to keep the marks contained, but a personal and moral dillema; that to an extent, the responsibility of keeping these marks contained mirrored whatever reason their family felt they needed to contain themselves. They had no idea whatever that reason could have been, but if it was good enough to keep an adolescent absent from the world and all of its wonders for over a century, then at least the effort put in to do so alone was respectable. In some ways, they grew a kind of attachment to these dangerous marks; a kind of relation. While wanting to move on and experience what was ahead of them, it was important for them to accept their past circumstances so that they can best handle their future.
 
This acceptance was vital in keeping focused in what was important; keeping this curse under wraps as efficiently as possible. They used their natural desire to see the world to allow them to learn more and more about the land they found themselves in, Nyre. In their travels, they were able to keep the feelings of personal neglect at bay, partially by making up for what they could not achieve physically by accepting and making the most of what they could socially. As it turns out, travelling 'irresponsibly' while having your own kind of responsibility to manage can make you quite wise for your age. In their travels, they had come across many who expressed interest in these marks, particularly as if they were tattoos. While this distinction almost cost some people their lives, they found that the ideal way to cover themselves was with an excess of rope wrapped around themself. This advice, coming from a magical tattoo artist, is helping them reintegrate and feel once again like a person, for as long as these marks will allow.
