Chapter 1: “Good Soldier”
Connor was 18 when he joined to serve the army in his city of Caelum Anima. During the time he decided to join, his city was filled with propaganda posters and town criers boasting how honorable it is to serve your noblemen and kingdom. “Help us spread greatness across these wild lands.” is one of the main things even to this day Connor remembers seeing everywhere. Being surrounded by this influenced him into wanting to protect and serve his kingdom as he felt it was the best way to help everyone around him.
Across the years until he was 25, he has fought across many battles and was respected by his fellow soldiers due to his high intelligence helping him strategize on the fly and reducing the loss of life on their side with expert planning. Aiding him to rise through the ranks rapidly to become a Corporal in the military.
However, his luck ran out during his final service as he, like hes always done before. He planned out almost every single possibility that could happen in the battlefield and every strategical point to take advantage of and like before it was going to plan. Until it suddenly wasn’t. Unknown as to why at the moment, he was tackled to the ground by someone, moments before being engulfed in a giant ball of flame and blacking out due to sheer pain coming from his left arm and the side of his face.
Waking up sometime later after the battle, Connor found himself in a hospital being healed by one of the clerics stationed there. Scaring her shitless from being woken up as if it was a surprise he recovered as fast as he did. The cleric spoke in an unidentifiable language before rushing out of sight.
Chapter 2: New Perspective
Waking up sometime later after the battle, Connor found himself in a hospital being healed by one of the clerics stationed there. Scaring her shitless from being woken up as if it was a surprise he recovered as fast as he did. The cleric spoke in an unidentifiable language before rushing out of sight.
A couple things Connor noticed when he woke up, was that half of his vision was gone or covered up on the left side of his face, and more noticeably that he couldn't move his left arm at all and trying to reach up to his face. In fact, despite feeling an agonizing pain in his left arm when he eventually tried to sit up to look at it he realised that he actually doesn't have a left arm anymore, only bandages on a remaining stump that used to be where the rest of his arm was, unable to be moved. This sent him into a massive shock and panic, trying to figure out what exactly caused this to happen and why exactly he's missing a limb. Despite his best efforts of trying to get out of bed, due to his condition, he is too weak to even stand on his own two feet.
Luckily before Connor made any rash decisions the cleric came back with two high ranking people. One being someone who Connor worked with directly in the military, General Vinova and a nobleman, which is a rare sight for a soldier, at least privately. General Vinova spent the majority of the time explaining what happened in the battle and although it being an overall huge success due to the planning beforehand in case things went wrong, she did break the unfortunate news of how Connor not only lost his arm but his left eye as well.
The bad news wasnt that Connor himself was severely injured, but the fact that his close friend of five years that he considered family, Bradley, was the one that saved Connor by taking the full blast of the explosion. “He died honourably to save his comrades and will not be forgotten for his noble sacrifice.” echoes through Connors head while he's going through all of the memories they both shared. From climbing challenges, taking the piss out of each other, being the best man at Bradley’s wedding, babysitting his child and many, many more memories.
It never felt like he died honourably to Connor, in his eyes on that day he should've taken the full blast and be the one to shield Bradley. And upon processing on how Bradley died for him, to make sure that his friend had a second chance at life. From then on, he vowed to himself to make Bradleys sacrifice matter. Not to take lives for unnecessary battles, but to help the suffering and disabled, to ensure others get to have the second chance, to preserve life no matter the cost.
General Vinova pronounced Connor Love-Heart honourably discharged due to being unfit for service within the military. Connor, to Vinova’s surprise, didn’t mind losing his military job and just thanked her for the opportunity to serve their kingdom. Before Connor could continue that thought, the nobleman finally spoke, making it clear that Connor could still serve the kingdom but in a different light. Due to his brilliant mind, the nobles have taken notice of him and offer him a new position that is more fitting of his skillset. A little bit of back and forth, with Connor explaining of what he wants to do next and the nobleman describing his new position as the opportunity to do exactly what Connor wants but at a much larger scale, not only helping individual people but potentially entire cities, not to mention being taken care of as one of the noble council's own and anything he needs for his recovery at this current time will be taken care of. After careful consideration for a couple of hours, Connor agreed to his new position within the kingdom as the royal wizard.
Chapter 3: Joy of Creation
Connor settled into his new profession as well as to be expected. There were obvious pros and cons to the fresh start that he has been given. The positive was that he was able to spend a good amount of time helping others and learning how to improve his inventions to better help the populace. However the not so positive side of things for him is that he had to deal with all of the bureaucracy and politics that comes with his new position.
Unless if it was anything that would directly affect the soldiers that put their lives on the line or the general civilians that lived around the borders, Connor couldnt give less of a fuck about what petty squabbles or policies was brought up in the meetings that he was forced to attend. Often staying quiet or being completely disinterested unless someone asked him about his opinion, which could have ranged from actually helpful to simply saying that they need to rethink their entire pitch. This has gotten Connor into trouble with some nobles across the years, but often his contributions mechanically, general aid to military technology and disabled healthcare across the entire city.
Across the years he was within this job he managed to create a few big inventions/advancements, such as making a functional mechanic prosthetic arm, with the use of cogs to be able to articulate the joints on an arm and hand as soon at is attached to the stump of the missing limb. Experimenting with different methods of trying to regrow lost limbs to little success. While the royal court provided test subjects initially to make sure its safe due to the fact the first round of testing, 90% of subjects died while the rest were severely crippled, Connor refused to have any more test subjects, he experimented on himself instead in secret, to reduce the amount of collateral damage if something were to go wrong. The closest the experiment has gotten to working is when Connor made a ball, that when in contact with a person's skin, attaches itself to the individual and administers an injection containing small metallic golems directly into the bloodstream to circulate around the body. The results after this, while not able to regrow limbs, did considerably improve health with the immune system being strengthened considerably and enhancing joint movement and agility without it degrading normally with age. He made a metal masked shaped like a crow, with the beak being able to filter any poisonous or toxic gas into clean air while the metal provides protection from sharp objects from hitting his head and piercing through, the eyes glowing blue to give focus to certain objects he needs to work on.
And one of the more personal inventions that has taken years to plan and make for Connor was a form of protection in case anything went truly wrong. He incorporated designs based on his previous combat experience as a soldier, with polearms but also wanted it to fold into itself and be used as a long range substitute. Crossbow designs didn't really work out well, due to the string that is required always getting tangled into the components during the folding into itself phase or snapping entirely due to the force. But with enough trial and error, Connor invented a one of a kind matchlock pistol and glaive hybrid thats powered by a enchanted gem built inside of the weapon, which is encased in the hardest material on the weapon to keep it protected, making it able to fold out into a glaive seemingly out of thin air and fold back into a pistol with the flick of a wrist and accidentally a verbal command, because due to the gem inside the weapon became sentient and changed shape, only by the command of its master of its choice.
Connor accidentally making what he would consider a form of life, bewildered him due to the constant questions it had about its creation and who Connor was and what its purpose was, all of which Connor patiently answered for hours until eventually the weapon asked one vital question “Master, what is my name?”. Connor stared and pondered very carefully, he didn't know why he chose the name he was about to, because by now it had been over a decade since the incident, but he couldn't help himself. “If you choose to accept this name, I would wish to call you Bradley.”, which the weapon responded happily: “Bradley. That sounds like an extraordinary name. I love it!!!”
Chapter 4: Duty to the Stones
It was time Connor was entrusted with the most important jobs he will have in his entire life. Both the royal court and the churches approval, from his outstanding work he has been selected to perform maintenance on the ARIA stones to ensure their continued operation. It was very crucial that anything that was even remotely, slightly off with the stones had to be reported back to the church and find a solution to solve whatever the problem was. It was also abundantly clear, that any misuse of the ARIA stones will be dealt with with a swift and painful punishment due to the cultural and spiritual significance they provide. With this in mind, Connor always kept an eye out with everybody they worked with, including himself to make sure that the stones were respected and protocol was followed. Connor took this job extremely to heart, given that the whole purpose of the stones was to connect the kingdoms across the whole of Festrya and the majority of them able to function thanks to these stones. It was also during these times that Connor kept a journal, every single time he had to perform repairs on the ARIA stones or any anomalies and how he was able to fix them or needed assistance with it.
Chapter 5: The Fall of Caelum Anima
When Connor was at the ARIA stone itself trying to do maintenance due to the fact that the stone, for the last couple of weeks, has been acting very strange, which has predominantly taken up all of his time. And thats when he saw all the other cities and kingdoms start to fall. It started with one being swarmed with these monster-like creatures, begging for help before their stone disconnected them completely from the grid. Then another city started to fall with the same demonic creatures that now being able to tell from a closer distance, resembled a rotting corpse being puppeted to cause carnage before that stone too went dark and it just kept on happening one by one, at increasing speed. Before too Connor too realised that the people around him started to show symptoms of being sick resembling the people inside the ARIA stone, before mere minutes later, those that were showing symptoms turned into those rotten creatures that were on the other side of the stone and the city Caelum Anima began to crumble around him, with the infection spreading dramatically around the entire city. Connor was fortunate enough to keep Bradley on him at all times, because if it wasn't then he probably wouldn't be able to survive, fighting his way around the infected until he could find a safe spot.

“Master, what shall we do?” said Bradley awaiting instructions. Connor, going off of his instincts, replied: “We evacuate anyone we can from this city.” and with that being said, both Bradley and Connor attempted to save as many people as they possibly could from the city that is currently being overrun. A lot were unable to be saved from being already too far gone by getting infected to being swarmed by too many infected for Connor and Bradley to deal with or by sheer uncooperativeness of the victims. It was a bloody nightmare that seemed to never end, no matter how hard he tried, but in the end he managed to evacuate 5 different people. His old best friends wife and now 35 year old son, with three other civilians, escaping into the lands beyond the city walls, never looking back at the horrors that have now taken hold over it. If this was an ordinary siege or battle in the town, Connor would’ve felt like a coward and betrayed his people, but this wasn’t anything like that, it was beyond worse than anyone could have imagined and the only thing that mattered right now to Connor is that anyone in his care survived. “Bradley?” “yes master?” Bradley responded to Connor. “One, I'm not your master and two, I think has dramatically changed in the world and not for the better.” without another word being shared between the two, both seemed to agree in silence.
Chapter 6: Third Fresh Start
Over the course of a couple months, the survivors' numbers start to dwindle as each of the civilians that he saved from the city, began to come down with the infection. Over the course of the coming weeks Connor saw each stage of the infection before putting them down humanely . the first one to get infected, Connor could do nothing but watch the stages and keep them away from the rest to not spread the infection. The second person that got infected, Connor actually did try to see if he could cure them, but it seemed that all the stuff that connor tried ended up not working out and with the third person that became infected, connor tried to use his experimental nanites to administer, to see if that could fight off the infection, but by the time it was administered it seemed to cause the person so much pain internally that they were beginning to the put down to put an end to the pain they were writhing in, which he eventually obliged to. Leaving only his best friend's widow and their son traveling with Connor across the lands. During this time they heard that there was one ARIA Stone barely clinging on to life in what seems to be the last standing city in Festrya and upon hearing this news even if it was just a rumor Connor made a beeline to it along with his refugees. It was during this trip that connors luck would have ran out as they were trapped in a building with infected surrounding it. With nowhere really to go and impending doom surrounding them Connor decided that if someone had to go down to save everyone else that he would give them a fighting chance. A long embrace between his best friend's widow and her son before handing the son his old glave he used to use when he was a soldier, told him quickly how to stay away from the infected and what to do in emergency situations to keep everyone safe. While the family was heartbroken they understood why he was doing this and to Connor himself he knew his friend Bradley, wherever he was, would be proud of him. “Bradley!” “Yes master?” “Let's make them work hard to take us down, shall we?” “Right on sir. It's been a pleasure to work with you.” Before Connor crashed out the window and started firing at the horde, attracting them with the noise away from the building that the family was stranded in. 30 minutes of running, firing and slicing through the horde with his glaive, Connors luck again began to run out as he was trapped in a corner surrounded by way too many infected to shoot or slice through without being overwhelmed. He thought back to how he has lived a good 58 years of his life by now and that he was ready to finally move on and close the book on his life, finally repaying Bradley for his sacrifice many years ago.

He thought back to how he has lived a good 58 years of his life by now and that he was ready to finally move on and close the book on his life, finally repaying Bradley for his sacrifice many years ago.
Though to Connors surprise, he saw bodies flying from behind the horde, the sound of crushing bones and something similar to pots and pans smashing together, like the once familiar sounds of a busy kitchen. A minute later, a figure cut through the horde, which appeared to be dressed as a chef and wielding oversized kitchen utensils as weapons. After seeing that, he was filled with hope again, helping to thin the horde before it came down to only them two. When the dust settled, at first the man was interrogating Connor if he was infected which he tried to de-escalate by stating he didn't have the symptoms which he had observed from the previous infected, unknowing if he could reason with the mad chef. Connor kept his hand over Bradley, ready to quickly draw him if the situation turned sour. But fortunately the chef believed him and his explanation. Connor noticed that the man's meat tenderizer and apron were badly damaged from constant use and offered to repair it good as new as thanks for the rescue, Which the man accepted and while Connor spent time repairing the gear, both men decided to chat and get to know each other more, finding some common ground and that they were actually heading to the same place. He also figured out that the man’s name was Lou, which Bradley said was a lovely name, which slightly startled him as that was the first time Bradley spoke to Lou. From then on, the three of them agreed to travel together and watch each others backs and quite possibly save those that need saving.
