Introverted, tired, bookish girl who was changed into a small black cat upon discovering the obscure and magical Verum Sui Excitatio in a bin of donated books.
Even as the city, no, the world itself began to change and grow all the more fantastical and overwhelming with each passing mega-event that threatened the city, Mei ignored it all. She was far more at home with her own stories, the books she grew up with and the new ones she devoured.
To her, the world's rapid changes were something of an annoyance. Nonfiction and Fiction were rapidly swapping places; informational books on physics were now outdated unless they talked about new discoveries of the magical. Creatures thought to be fantasies, such as werewolves, were revealed to have been around much longer than she thought. It was hard to keep track of...but books were static. They were comfort. And they didn't make fun of her for her withdrawn nature or nerdy interests or the bits of fiction she tried to write...
That was, until, while at her favorite library working as an assistant and sorting through donated books, she came across a stack of weird, musty tomes from...ah, no address? Strange. There was one titled Verum Sui Excitatio that looked downright ancient, and the covering looked practically patchwork...but she couldn't help herself. On her break, she slid into a study space to read it, and as the swore she could imagine the words dancing off the pages, she fell asleep...
And awoke several feet shorter, covered in fur, with a sudden mild craving for fish, AND the book was completely and utterly gone. Not just from the room, but from the library itself. In her shock and shame, her own interests had brought her into this strange, ever-changing world of robots and dream beasts and wendigos, and without the book, she'd never be able to change back!
And so she seeks, online and in person, strange, magical books of many different sorts. Whatever she can find. Dangerous ones...not because she wants to use them for evil, but because she knows a misplaced spell or the reading of a page really can change you from the inside out...
