Formerly a simple blacksmith, Sigmund's village was terrorised by a notorious bandit wielding a cursed sword that would eat the souls of those he killed. Sigmund attempted to fight him, and forged a contract with the weapon, turning it into his hammer.

Formerly a simple blacksmith, Sigmund's village was terrorised by a notorious bandit wielding a cursed sword that would eat the souls of those he killed. Sigmund attempted to fight him, and forged a contract with the weapon, turning it into his hammer.
 
The weapon, named Dirge, urges Sigmund to feed it souls, so Sig left his village in search of monsters to slay in order to satiate the hammer. Dirge finds this acceptable, but constantly tries to gain the souls of innocents.
