Beyond combat, Rolandus is also a capable surgeon, his swordsmanship lending itself to the careful art of suturing and cutting. Although not a trained physician, his practical experience makes him effective in treating wounds, particularly in the field, where his skills are often needed. By the standards of most places outside Rostova, he is a competent healer, though his medical knowledge is more instinctive than formal.

Once a rising star among Rostova’s Steel Dancers, Rolandus’ life took a tragic turn when a forbidden romance with a noblewoman led to his exile. Banished from his home, stripped of his future, and separated from the woman he loved, he became a wanderer, carrying his silent regrets with him. His Cryst-Nirithean sword, taken from a crypt of the ancient Ardent Knights, is more than just a weapon—it’s a conduit for Volos, a spirit drawn to Rolandus through the conduit of the sword​​. It may be that Volos feeds off his unresolved anger, yet Rolandus also finds solace in his role as protector. Despite the internal turmoil, he is fiercely protective of his companions and seeks to redeem himself by safeguarding those who cannot defend themselves.

Motivation

Rolandus is torn between two driving forces: the simmering anger that Volos feeds upon and his deep desire to protect others. His exile still haunts him, and though he seeks redemption, he has not yet realized that his unchecked rage could lead him down a darker path. Volos’ influence is a constant presence, tempting him with power, but Rolandus’ core remains focused on his duty to those around him. He travels with the party not just out of necessity, but also out of a need to prove that he can still protect and serve, even as the weight of his past and his connection to the Cryst-Nirithean sword pull at him from within.
 
Quiet and reserved, Rolandus prefers to let his actions speak for him. His silence, however, masks a deep and unresolved anger, stemming from his exile and betrayal. This fury, which he has yet to fully confront, fuels his relentless drive to perfect his skills in combat. At the same time, he sees himself as a protector, fiercely loyal to those he cares about and willing to place himself in danger to shield others. The presence of Volos complicates his internal landscape, with the spirit both amplifying his rage and offering power when needed. Despite this darkness, Rolandus has a keen sense of duty and will go to great lengths to ensure the safety of his companions, even if it means sacrificing his own well-being.
