Session 5: Troubles with tears Report
General Summary
Respected members of the Hillfield Council,
I hereby submit my report of the investigation into the unlawul mining beneath the Monastery of the Five Saints.
The investigation led to the arrest of two Dwarven miners and one Duergar mercenary. One Dwarven miner resisted arrest and unfortunatly lost his life in the fight that followed.
During the investigation we were aided by Alistan and Liliana de la Roost as well as their compatriots. The city guard would like to officially extend our most sincere gratitude for their help.

At noon I personnaly joined a patrol on the northern ramparts of the Woodgate. I inspected the men and their equipment and found all in order. On my way back to the Woodgate Guard Office, I noticed a small crowd gathering at the entrance to the Belenus Chapel of the Monastery of the Five Saints. After a short inquiry I learned the abbot had decided to keep the chapel doors locked, denying entrance to the worshipers of Belenus. While the small crowd was getting restless, there did not seem to be a real threat of violence. As we have no jurisdiction over the temple opening hours I left the scene.
An hour after noon I was attending to my duties at the Woodgate Guard Office, filing reports and responding to official correspondance. I was appraoched by one of the guard on duty at the front door. He informed me that a group consisting of 7 concerned citizens wanted to meet with me.
These citizens were:
Alistan de la Roost
Liliana de la Roost
Hayley Thomas
Luke Thomas
Gael
Dadroz
Ileas
It is worth noting that the previous evening this group had been instrumental in beating back a terrorist attack against the Woodgate. Despite their young age, their actions proved they could be trusted.
I met with the group and they asked for permission to further investigate the actions of the Satyr clans within the walls of Hillfield. They assured me they would not engage in any illegal activity and would report any finding to me. Because of their previous actions, I allowed them to continue their investigation.
About two and a half hours later I was informed that Luke and Hayley Thomas and Gael had returned. They told me they had noticed several dwarves acting suspisciously. They shadowed these dwarves and followed them in to the sewers. To gain access to the sewers the dwarves used the access hatch north of the monastery, within Saints Park. The group had tailed the Dwarves even within the sewers and had found out they were digging a chamber beneath the monastery.
The perpetrators were 3 Dwarves and 1 Duergar. The Dwarves are miners by trade but were passing through town. The Duergar is known to us. He is named Dorr. He is a mercenary who usually accompanies caravans from and to Keralon. He has been arrested for drunken and disorderly behavior before, but never for anything more.
The group had confronted the Dwarves and demanded answers. The Dwarves refused. The group then proceeded to try and arrest them, which led to a fight. While 2 of the 3 dwarves and their Duergar leader were knocked unconscious, the third dwarf died resisting arrest. While it is unclear what exactly happened, it is obvious the Dwarves' hostile and illegal actions led to the death of one of them. My investigation clears the group of young investigators af all wrongdoing. They were careful and methodical in their approach and managed to peacefully arrest 3 criminals. After the fight, three of the group came back to my office to report.
I sent five guards with Hayley, Luke and Gael and they retrieved the perpetrators.
When they regained consciousness, the dwarves confessed their crime. They claim to have been hired by a young monk named Marik. The were to dig for a specific item, an old leatherbound book of magic lore. They did not yet find it.
I suggest the two remaining Dwarves be fined 50gp each and that they are ordered to aid in refilling the hole they dug. Dorr should be fined 100gp and he should be escorted out of Hillfield with an effective banishment from the city for a year and a day.
We may need to investigate further as there are rumors that the illegal mine beneath the monastery might be connected to the closing of the Belenus chapel.

I hope this report is satisfactory and will provide you with the information needed to come to a judgement. If you deem it necesarry I can arrange for a formal public hearing, although I do not think the severity of the crimes are high enough to warrant it.
With regards,
Sergeant Berris
