Niarts gnid niblleps foasolot
I am Jareo, travelling bard by choice and the realm-hopper because destiny is, well to say it mildly, one of the orc women I ran from.-- Jareo Contrix
A packed tavern is busy with all the patrons, but when a bard strikes a string everybody stops what they were doing and listens to the enchanting melody played. It was an early autumn morning, when I woke up to the sounds of the rusty old tavern sign of the Sippy Tankard swinging in the wind.
Everyone sways in unison almost like in a trance.
When it ends, all of the listeners are shifting in place like they just had an epiphany.
A question keeps resonating among the crowd:
How do you write such melody?
I was alone in the room with a bulging hangover, every item in the room was spinning and changing colours like those sun marionettes.
I sit up on the edge of the wooden bed frame, which creaked a bit, looked around and my gaze was immediately drawn to the purplish golden sky outside the window.
I stood up still light on my feet and as I got closer to the window, the yellowish lightning struck across the sky.
It all felt undeniably weird - It must be that damn ale - I thought to myself.
I packed my things to the small traveling bag, closed the door and went down the stairs, I saw in the corner of my eye the barkeep, Korin, who was cleaning as usual for the next busy tavern night.
[J] How much is my tab, old friend?
[K] 7 gold pieces and I am not your friend nor old! - said Korin with a groan.
[J] Make it 8 and next time we see each other you give me a better room. - I said while nonchalantly putting gold on the counter.
[J] Till next time, old friend!
I swung the bag across my back and approached the tavern door, strong wind heaved the doorway open knocking over nearby table. Korin rushed from behind the counter to close the door, when he was stunned by the scenery outside.
Everything was sparkling, the colours shifted across the landscape, in the middle of the road there was a swirling portal that uttered an enchanting whisper:
Niarts gnid niblleps foasolot
I moved closer to the whispering portal almost unwillingly drawn towards it, extended my arm and in an instant everything started swirling around me, space was becoming smaller and smaller every second and in the end devouring me.
I stood there in a complete whiteness, confused what is to follow, after what seemed like hours of roaming aimlessly, I appeared in a forest, but not an usual one, tree barks were white with golden sparks and leaves were of bluish hue, with some covering the path through.
As there was no coming back, I followed the trail.
Everything around me was surreal, the animals resembled what I know, but were eerie, enchanting and fabulous. All of the sounds were in a perfect harmony that you have never heard.
As I was moving through the forest it started to become dimmer and more gloomy. At one of the curves I noticed old lady, who was leaning on the tree trying to pick mushrooms.
I came closer and said:
Hello there young lady! Aren't your parents worried sick about you being in such a gloomy place? I am unsure of where I am currently, would you be so kind to tell me the name of this place?
Without turning, she responded:
Tolosa, You are in Tolosa
I said:
Let me help you with that mushroom and let's get you back to your elders
I crouched and picked up the mushroom, it had a green cap and yellow stem. When I stood up, the old lady was hunched and had a wicker basket on her arm brimmed with colourful mushrooms. I gently added it to the top and offered my arm to keep going, she gently put her hand on mine and we silently moved through the forest, the silence was echoing between my ears, but it wasn't uncomfortable, it was peaceful and first time in a long time I didn't need a way to hush my thoughts.
She moved way quicker than I expected and did not need my assistance in any capacity, but I saw on her wrinkled face that she appreciated it.
We followed the trail for a couple of moments and we approached a high wooden barricade with two tree-like guards in front of it.
As we approached, they pointed their spears towards the old lady and hushed some unrecognizable words to her. She moved back in response and said to me:
It was lovely to keep you company, but I cannot accompany you further, you go on, your destiny awaits you
I tried to reason with the guards.
What is the reason of this? What has she done?but was left with an overwhelming and resonating sounds hurting my ears.
Small part of the barricade changed into a similar portal that led me here and I saw the rusty sign of my favourite tavern swinging.
As much as I wanted to return, I couldn't make myself leave this lovely old lady alone.
She moved slowly, as if waiting for a decision, towards the forest, she put her hand on the first tree's bark the same way when I first saw her.
I hurriedly walked towards here and put my hand on hers and world started swirling again with the familiar walls starting to close in on me.
I woke up , opened my eyes and was in one of the rooms of the Sippy Tankard, it was just a dream - I thought.
I looked towards the nightstand and saw a crumpled up piece of paper, I straightened it out and saw the words:
Niarts gnid niblleps foasolotwith a squiggly mess below it written in gold, which transformed before my own eyes into a musical sheet titled
Spellbinding strain of TolosaI couldn't believe my eyes and for a moment I looked through the window towards the horizon and saw a friendly figure leaning on the tree, I could feel the warming smile on my cheek and then she was gone.
I would tell that story when asked how did I come up with this enchanting melody, but no one would believe me, so I just say
I am just that good!
