Fate Chasers
All people get randomly assigned life length when they are born, some get more some are not so lucky.
This magical number determines in most cases, how much one can do during their existence.
Nevertheless, each choice can drastically shorten the life of an individual.
There are some ways to prolong the existence, but one of them is to use the Fate Chaser.
There is this secret society called Fate Chasers, who are reportedly the only sentient beings that can see this divine number over the heads of each living creature.
They can't intervene in any way, but if they are around when the creature's life unnaturally ends, they can absorb their otherwise remaining lifetime into their hourglass-shaped medallion.
The Fate Chasers are often spotted around mental institutions, bars with dark alleys in rather bad neighbourhoods and definitely battlefields.
They are expected to offer the lifetime, they gather from the unfortunate souls, in a ritual.
The ritual involves placing the medallion in a carved place in the Vigour tree surrounded by the lake of essences.
The tree glows bright-blue absorbing the lifeforce and the moving it to the low-hanging branches touching the water surface, then the lifetime is dispersed into the lake.
The Fate Chasers can be seen as balance keepers, lifetime tenders and watchers, but not everyone is so devoted and rather would use that essence for their own gain.
There are also corrupted ones, drunk with power, who want to seize the opportunity and gain riches and influence on someone's misfortune.
They work with crime syndicates, offering invaluable insight into the world behind the veil, while getting benefits from the crimes and carnage they cause.
Many things are important and expensive, but nothing comes close to the time that you can acquire for yourself or the crime lord you work for.
