The Astral Divide

The Astral Divide is the realm of thought and dream, where visitors travel as disembodied souls to reach the Higher Planes. It's an infinite expanse of dark water covered in a silvery mist. Within the water, the very constellations of the Material world can be seen.    Despite it's initial appearance, the Astral Divide is not entirely devoid of life or activity. It is home to some of the more deadly creatures that have ever existed within the Worldsphere. Occasionally, a traveler might stumble upon the bones of ancient civilizations or titanic beings floating silently within the Ocean of memories; the waters of time slowly eroding even the forgotten, returning them to true non-existence.    Creatures on the Astral Plane don’t age or suffer from hunger or thirst. For this reason, humanoids that live on the Astral Plane establish outposts on other planes, often the Material Plane, so their children can grow to maturity.

Game Mechanics

A traveler in the Astral Plane can move by simply thinking about moving. This requires a great deal of concentration, and those that lapse in concentration will find themselves pulled towards the inky black waters. The smarter a creature is, the easier it can control its movement by act of will. Moving vertically is as easy as moving in any other direction, because of this.    Walking speed in #feet = 3 x Intelligence score, without any additional modifiers.   Creatures with a negative ability score modifier in Intelligence can't maintain concentration on spells while also moving. A creature that triggers an attack of opportunity by moving, also has disadvantage to maintain concentration on spells if struck.

Travel

True distance is not measured in literal feet, but in time spent in willing yourself to move towards your destination. Creatures are said not to move to the destination, as to move the destination closer to it. The time it takes to get to any location from any other location is thus measured more in how many different creatures you have concentrating, and how difficult the location is to solidify in the mind's eye.   In general, a trek that would take a full day's overland travel if the "distance" were projected onto the Material plane might only take a few hours for a being of great intellect, or several days for a dim being.
