Five Families
Five families that each represent a different gemstone and culture, vying for control over Nova Excelsium and its many profitable businesses.
The entire city acts like a politically-separated bureaucracy, with the common people wearing clothing and jewels to represent one of the houses. The gangs, shops, and government personnel also make this distinction, all claiming to be blood or in-law related to any members of the royal families.
Each family also has its own culture, heritage, and way of producing airships.
The Valanche family, who uses the emerald as their emblem. Their colorful airships are powered by magical ores and magically imbued crystals imported from afar. They have Slyborn Hall, a large estate on the mainland, and the family takes unrestrained advantage of the comforts and luxuries available to their position and present a striking or flamboyant appearance.
The Valanche family representative to the Nova Excelsium council is Lytton Valanche, eldest son.
The Trigg family is represented by the ruby, and has been known to take on military contracts, providing escorts and vehicles for weapon shipments. Their airships are often armored and powered by huge fiery engines. They have Battenkett House, a large estate on one of the floating islands, and the family takes unrestrained advantage of the comforts and luxuries available to their position and present a striking or flamboyant appearance.
The Trigg family representative to the Nova Excelsium council is Hermetrine Trigg, family matriarch.
The Adler family claims the opal as their emblem. Their airships are made of ultra-light wood and are powered by clever use of manifold sails. Their ships may be smaller, but they are among the nimblest, able to maneuver the winds to their advantage. They have Pearlhall, a small estate on one of the floating islands, and quietly enjoy the luxuries afforded to their position and present a refined, well-maintained appearance.
The Adler family representative to the Nova Excelsium council is Alim Adler, family primarch
The Godolphin family is represented by the sapphire. Their airships are powered through steam engines, and are among the slowest in speed, but the newest generation has been oddly secretive about the new technology at which they've hinted. They have Bridewater Manor, a large estate on one of the floating islands and quietly enjoy the luxuries afforded to their position and present a refined, well-maintained appearance.
The Godolphin family representative to the Nova Excelsium council is Taanta Godolphin, eldest daughter.
The only exception is the Corentin Family, who was represented by the diamond, and was renowned for their high morals and sleek, elegant airships, was recently eliminated from Nova Excelsium in a genocide, which rumors say was orchestrated by the other families. No one has seen a Corentin in the last decade and Gardiron Manor, their large estate on the mainland, has fallen into disrepair, only a handful of loyal servants able to maintain the bare minumum of care to the property.
