Passive checks and taking 10, solo and with party

House Rule

  • Passive checks listed on your character sheet is if you are basically "taking 10" on searching a room, or trying to spot someone.
  • They can only be done from the 3 abilities: insight, investigation, perception
  • Taking 10 was an old method of how players could insure an average die roll in 3.5e
  • However "taking 10" also takes time. It is usually done out of combat, and when the character has time to do an ability check.
  • These passive checks are meant to reduce dice rolling, and speed up gameplay and story

  • Taking 20, a carryover rule from 3.5e has been REMOVED.  A roll must be made.

Taking 10:

    Perception:
  • Looking around the environment (but not actively searching). Typically being in an area for a minute.
  Investigation:
  • Actively Searching Typically 3 rounds (or 15 seconds) per square per character.
  Insight:
  • Typically speaking with a character for 3 minutes.

Party check:

  • The party must decide to make the decision to passively search the rooms
  • The highest passive score is chosen.
  • If two or more players are performing the check, add +5 to the passive score.
  • If the lead player has advantage on the roll, usually through magical means, add +5 again.
