- Lazlo Ulrich was the burgomaster of Berez.
- When he learned that Strahd von Zarovich had taken interest in a local girl, Marina, Lazlo killed her to save her from servitude. Strahd destroyed Berez in retribution, and Lazlo died with it.
- His ghost still haunts the ruins of the town.
