Critical Hits | House Rule

House Rule

  1. Creature rolls a natural 20 (or a critical), roll again to see if I get another 20.
  2. Roll for damage normally
  3. Then determine the MAXIMUM damage you can roll with your attack BEFORE any modifiers.
  4. Add the roll from (2) and (3)
  5. Then add modifiers
  6. This is the critical hit
  7. The creature takes 1 level of exhaustion (if it is also not immune)

Example:

  • I rolled a 20
  • I am attacking with a short sword with d6 + 1 (strength modifier)
  • I roll for damage normally.  I rolled a 3.
  • 3 + 6 = 9
  • Then add modifiers: +1 -> 9 + 1 = 10

Double 20s:

  • A double 20 can be rolled, ONLY if a natural 20 is rolled to begin with. (1:400 chance)
  • When I roll a 20, I always roll again (like rolling for advantage) to see if I get another 20.
  • I roll for damage as above, for a normal critical, but it is again DOUBLED again, or approximately 4x of a normal hit

Triple 20s:

  • If the Gods favor you, you can roll a triple 20 (1/20^3 = 1:8000)
  • This is the max amount that can be rolled, it can only happen on a natural die roll of 20, 20, 20 (no modifiers)
  • Roll as above, but this time the damage is approximately 8x of a normal hit
