The Old Ones create the Universe

In the beginning, the Great Old Ones lived in the featureless Astral plane. They were masters of a domain in which they could simultaneously create and destroy anything they desired. In a flash of brilliance (or madness) the old ones created the multiverse, a vast collection of different planes of existence. Upon this canvas, the Great Old Ones would spend the eons playing "The Game", creating and destroying worlds, systems, even entire galaxies at a whim.

The Great Ethereal River, Isleron would slowly move the ring out outer sphere planes through the inner sphere, creating advantages and disadvantages for those vying for control.   The Old Ones agreed to wage their war over The Prime through the creation of minions and armies across the multiverse, but only using them when those pieces passed through the Inner Sphere. The only other rule was no direct interference - any minion that could be imagined could be created and used, but direct interference was forbidden.   It was in this terrible madness that the universe existed for nearly eight-hundred million years until, inexplicably, the old ones went dormant. They slept. Their worlds, their minions, their armies left to their own devices for the first time ever while the river Isleron flows inexorably forward.
