Tacitus
The Tacitus are the secret police that the Lord Protector can call on to ensure that all below him are following the way of the Voice. They also are answerable to the Senate as is the Lord Protector so that no person is working without oversight.
Other than these stipulations the Tacet agents can pass anywhere and command any other government officials. They are rightfully feared but also widely respected, they prefer people serve out of love, but they are not averse to implementing fear either.
Their motto Silence finds the Guilty is based on the idea that a guilty conscience can never rest in peace and only the innocent can be truly alone with their thoughts.
Structure
The Grand Inquisitor or Silencio is the head of the organisation and makes all executive decisions. Under him there will be several Tacet agents, numbering between 50 and 200 depending on their operations. Some will be clerks or other administrators and so will be used as and when required. Those who are employed full time are often referred to as inquisiors but technically they are still a Tacet agent. The Silencio assigns ranks on a colour system - Brass, Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Public Agenda
Their agenda is to ensure that no one can utilise the resources of the Protectorate for self interest. They can call anyone other than the Lord Protecor to account be they a peasant or a decorated general. They promote themselves as the instrument of justice, however in their practices they emphasise the punishment of the guilty to a larger degree.
Their commitment to the vision of the republic means that any agent caught in untoward activity will allways have the death penalty. This serves two functions, to dissuade corruption but also as a message to the public. Tacitus is not above the law.
Assets
They do not have many assets to hand but can requisition other assets and petition the Treasury for money when they need to fund an operation.
However they do have a secure vault within the Harmonium that functions as their base of operations. Keys are given to all agents of the Tacitus but it is against protectorate law for access to be granted to anyone not actively working for the organisation.
History
Founded by Davinae Goran, as she realised that her brother had subverted all that their father had done and so there needed to be a manner by which even the most powerful were answerable to someone. The Tacitus and the Senate were both founded on this principle.
