Twins

Summary

The birth of twins is a rare and significant event in many parts of Yothal.
It is believed that both twins share a very important purpose that must be fulfilled at all costs for the betterment of the world.
It is thought that the task is so important that the gods split the destined soul in two and let them be born in separate bodies, so that
if one were to fail, the other could complete the task in their stead.

Historical Basis

This belief is said to originate from a historical event, where two twin brothers were born in the lands of Idune and were told by the goddess Lilithra to traverse the wild sea in search of a place that would be home to her children, the Elves.   When the brothers grew into adulthood, they set out to follow the wishes of the Goddess. They traveled across the sea which was known to be treacherous, but with the blessing of Lilithra over them, the goddess Zeirral kept their path free of storms.   With the guidance of the goddesses, they came across the lands that would come to be known as Esura. They faced many dangers in the wild and untamed lands, and it would come to pass that one of the brothers fell in the process of settling the land.   Lilithra is said to have made his body into a seed, and a sacred tree grew from his burial place to honor him and his servitude to the gods.   The remaining brother continued their work, and became the first ruler of Esura, taming the lands until civilization had settled in the first cities. His work nearly complete, Lilithra blessed him with a lover, the first of the elven lineage, born from the goddess herself.   The ruler and his lover would give birth to twins, one with skin as pale as sunlight, and one with skin as dark as night. From them, the Sun Elves, and the Moon Elves were born, and spread across the land that had been tamed just for them.

Spread

The belief is very widespread across Yothal, especially in the lands of Idune and Esura. It is considered quite common knowledge, being so closely tied to the founding of the kingdom, which many children learn of.

Variations & Mutation

There are some variations to the belief, such as the belief that one of the twins is always destined to die, while the other will succeed. Because of this, some parents of twins tend to ostracize one of the children to avoid getting attached, while setting the other child up for success in every way they can.   Some twins grow up bitterly fighting and competing, sometimes going so far as to slay their sibling to ensure that they are the twin who will fulfill the destiny.   In some circles, it is believed that only followers of Lilithra may be blessed with twins that carry this destiny, while others believe that only twins of elven heritage carry it.
