The story of The Divine Gate and The Wild Hunt
As told by Lorekeeper Laisren
Thousands of years ago during the formation of the world, when the gods were embroiled in wars between one another, they were able to reach out and directly influence matters on the material plane, it was during this time that the elves were created when corellon’s blood was shed upon the world after being badly wounded by Gruumsh. Soon afterwards Moradin created the first dwarves. And following that each god it seemed wanted to create their own legacy in the form of mortal creatures.
Seeing this and seeing the conflicts and inevitable destruction and genocide that would be the result of powers such as the gods were throwing around, it was the knowing mistress that called for a cease fire and put a proposal before the assembled gods.
It was she who saw the inevitable end to what was happening on the material plane if the gods were allowed to continue their direct interference with mortal kind. And so it was she who proposed the formation of the divine gate. This did not go over well and the enraged gods fought, laying waste to all around them. This battle went on for a time, the armies of each deity being called to aid their masters, hundreds of thousands died every day. After a time there was a natural lull in the fighting, and a number of the gods who after seeing this massive battle take place and the sheer destruction that was the result were able to realize what Ioun had been saying was correct and that if the gods were left to directly influence things on the material plane this battle would never end and the world would become nothing but a scorched battlefield. So the majority of the gods agreed, the demonic lords from the abyss of course did not but that was to be expected.
And so with the combined might of the gods they forced the demons back into the abyss and each donated a small fraction of their power, and under the eyes of all the gods Moradin was called to craft the gate between the worlds.
Moradin took those fragments of power and wrought them, blending their elements and creating a purely neutral force that was an aspect of all the gods, with that energy he created the gate to protect the mortal plane from outside influence.
Two of the gods however did not donate their power to the creation of the gate, as a different agreement had been reached between them.
Asmodeus and Ioun went aside from the other gods and discussed what they knew to be a flaw within the plan, in order for this gate and the structure defending the material plane to remain in place it would need to be defended and any circumvention of it or breaking of the agreements made would need to be enforced somehow.
And so Ioun and Asmodeus came to an agreement, they would designate a protector for the gate, a neutral enforcer, given the power of the gods themselves to enforce the binding agreement made that day.
Ioun called for her most loyal and powerful general. A planetar who came to her and listened to her orders, he nearly balked at the next part of the plan however as he looked upon Asmodeus and understood what his mistress was asking of him. Being truly loyal and understanding the need for this to be done, the planetar followed Ioun’s command and approached Asmodeus.
Asmodeus smiled upon the planetar and lightly stroked the left cheek of the planetar’s face, as he did so a jet of flame seemed to shoot out of his fingers and the planetar fell to the ground writhing in agony, his body being seared by flames, that covered half of his form. When the flames subsided and the planetar stood up he was revealed to have been changed dramatically, a single devilish horn protruded from the left forehead, his skin crackled and burned still on the left side, all feathers had been burned from his left wing.
Asmodeus then stepped back his smile even larger now and said, all hail the horned king.
The king had been imbued with the powers of his former mistress and asmodeus himself, he was now half devil half celestial, and he had been entrusted with the enforcement of the divine compact, to hunt and destroy absolutely any who should break this compact, and when in the pursuit of this goal, none would be able to stop him as it was within his ability to draw on the powers of all the gods that had been used to create the divine gate itself, making him far more powerful than any other being. But it also bound the king, for he was a being of power and magic, and therefore was bound by its rules, he was sworn into service, to never take a side, and to faithfully and fairly uphold the agreement made that day.
