Runes
If you are an artificer or blacksmith, then you should be considering runes. Runes, when carved in specific ways, can cast the most basic of spells when brought near magic energy, such as those from power crystals. They could do something as simple as igniting (very useful for blacksmiths looking to enchant a sword) to firing a beam of fire which explodes on contact- the latter would require a significantly larger crystal to power properly.
