Inside Byzmith Quary

General Summary

The party approached Byzmith Quary by boat coming up through the valley of Fangcrag. Nearing the source of the river deep in the heart of Byzmith Quary itself they come to the face of the mountain, two large Giant statues reaching forth from the rock. A caw echos through the valley and a bird with a 40ft wingspan soars into the air.
After a brief skirmish which draws forth the bird's handler, a Stone Giant, Alda is able to trick the bird into believing a potential mate is nearby causing it to withdraw from the battle. The birdhandler calmed his ire and was forgiving to the intruders. He let them enter the quarry, but with the warning that his kin were far more xenophobic and would attack on sight.
The party ventured in and came across Jørgenson very quickly, though he was petrified. His arm was outstretched and the hand had been snapped off. They continued forward and found signs of medium sized humanoids living in the quarry alongside the giants. In the next cavern they discovered a large pool of mud.
Suddenly
A Giant morphed out of the stone walls and shoved at Somnis and succeeded in pushing him into the mud. They mud gripped him like quicksand and began pulling him in. He felt a coldness begin to creep into his bones. As his friends fought and slayed the giant, Somnis turned to stone.
After much hastened searching, at Somnis' behest through his still active telepathic abilities, for some way to undo the petrification, they happened upon a treasure trove where, amongst other items they found a potion of Greater Restoration which was able to reverse the petrification. Not before the slaying of two further giants however.
Venturing onwards, the party came across two Giants that themselves appeared to be petrified. Without cause, seemingly, the gradually began to return to flesh. They took the inititive and slayed these Giants too before they became able to defend themselves. Some barbarians heard the commotion and attacked. Most of them died but the party knocked one unconscious and incapacitated the other for interrogation.
The Lizardfolk Huk'yaak Barbarian they captured was very forthcoming with information. He told the party that he had voluntarily joined the Huk'yaak. That there were several tribes of Huk'yaak and almost all of the were associated with one or other race of Giants. They were:
  • The Elk and the Black Lion tribes are associated with the Fire Giants
  • The Black Raven tribe are associated with the Frost Giants
  • The Great Worm and the Red Tigar tribes are associated with the Stone Giants
  • The Blue Bear and Thunderbeast tribes were associated with the Hill Giant, who have now been dominated by the Stone Giants, and so shifted their association to the Stone Giants
  • The Griffon tribe and the Sky Pony tribe are associated with the Cloud Giants
  • The Tree Ghost Tribe have supposedly been wiped out
  • The Grey Wolf tribe are unassociated and do not live in a single area, instead are spread all over the north

Additionally the Abandoned, a group of barbarians (who are not Huk'yaak) that were responsible for the sacking of the Azure Sanctuary, whom the party believed to be associated with the Stone Giants, are supposedly really in league with the Cloud Giants.
Finally he told the group that he didn't know about the Ebony Light, but if there was anything valuable here it was either in the treasure trove they already found or Kayalithica was keeping it on her person. She could be found in the temple, the next cavern northward.
The party released the Lizardfolk, and as he fled he morphed into a crocodile. They thought nothing of it. Before heading north, they searched the adjoining caverns. In one, Felix found a sarcophagus covered in hand prints, it appeared soft like clay. Upon touching the sarcophagus Felix was sucked inside, when the party tried to follow the sarcophagus had hardened.
Inside, Felix heard a deep voice say "Ask". "Ask what?" he responded. "Whatever you desire" responded the voice. "Where are the Gifts of the Eight?" Felix asked.
  • The Untouchable Bracez, the Omnishackles, The Ebony Light, and Hellsplitter were in Byzmith Quary
  • Mirage is in Yhanborgj
  • The Prison is in Sunken Khat, in the library
  • The Overseer is 3 weeks walk east of Ash Grove, buried in the Sprawl
  • Gloomskin is in The Dark Continent, in Harold's house

"Where is the prisoner I am looking for?" asked Felix. "Byzmith Quary" came the reply, and Felix was forced out of the sarcophagus. With this information Felix became suspicious of everyone, insisting they submit to the Omnishackles to prove they are not shapeshifters. Begrudgingly, one by one, everyone submitted. Deciding it might've been the Lizardfolk they released, they pursued him, subdued him and found out it wasn't him.
Deciding to push on they entered the temple. A battle quickly ensued between them and the inwardly enraged but outwardly calm Kayalithica. When they approached, she hid herself in a vast stalactite which formed the centre of the temple. When within melee range she emerged and attacked. She was armed with both Hellsplitter and The Ebony Light, and proved a difficult, in not restrained, foe. Eventually they won out.
Searching the Giant's corpse they found a Gnome, calling himself Elister Noggins, a un-gnomish sounding name if ever there were one. He resisted to being subjected to the Omnishackles and so was paralysed and forcefully restrained by them. He did not shapechange.
Continuing to the next cavern they encountered a group of barbarians who were led by a particularly gruff lady. She took a particularly strong disliking to Felix, and could not be pursuaded to move on. She rushed in and attacked, but was cut down by the party. Instead of just dying like any barbarian should, she instead unfurled into an ancient blue dragon, caved in the tunnel the party were exiting and flew away.
The party were able to leave the quarry without further entanglements. Where they head next is still to be seen.
