Slave Carts

The Darkness Below once kept our people silent, hiding under blankets and praying they would leave.

The master has turned their tools into our own. Our voices cannot be silenced.

Below the surface, below even the tunnels of the Dwarfs, is another world within ours, filled with unspeakable monstrosities. They are the culmination of curses, Elder Races forced from the face of Xùyì and hunted by their peers and Outsiders. Humanity and her allies know so little of what lies beneath their feet. No one realizes the horrors that have plagued the lands are only a bite-sized fraction of them. Although the valiant efforts of the Elves of the Living Shadows keep these evils at bay, many still manage to slip through the cracks of their guard, terrorizing the surface.

In a stroke of luck, however, some of the tools they had used against the surface have been stolen and repurposed against them. Several of their Slave Cages, the doleful rumble once heard outside small settlements on foggy days, have been negotiated by the Vampires, purchased from the Shadows. With little alterations, they have become one of the safest forms of transportation within the broken lands.

Twenty-five people can be forced into these cages simultaneously, though anywhere from fifteen to twenty is the ideal capacity. Using the strength of the Armored Husks, the human cargo can be transported through the wastelands and the End-Storms with relative ease. While the scent of the living attracts many of the blood-thirsty abominations to the cage, the intricate designs allow for very little to breach the containment. An ever-present skeletal force rides beside the cage, its presence is completely hidden from most of the horrors surrounding it.

Propulsion

Armored Husks, massive undead beasts with tough, leathery skin and a single curved horn, pull these carts. Despite these creatures moving slowly compared to other animals, they are reliable. Armored Husks only require food and water in the morning, and once they are taken care of, are capable of walking ceaselessly from sunrise to sunset.

Armor and defense

For maximum efficiency, three separate entities work together while transporting the cages. Skeletal hosts are a common sight, their lack of flesh and souls rendering them indistinguishable from the darkness. Enemies that reach the cage are caught by surprise as dozens of red eyes suddenly flash towards them, rusted blades gutting them as they attempt to enter the cages.

Elf sell-swords, especially those once belonging to the Living Shadows and desecrated woodlands, have been witnessed riding alongside these carts, especially on long pilgrimages. Their abilities to enter trances allow them to block off more of the mental horrors they have glimpsed, and their innate skill with magic is a valuable asset. As Outsiders target the forests, these Elf sightings have become worryingly common.

There are also Human Vanguards. They are butchers, people who have sold their rights and now spend their lives trying to repay their debt to society. These hardened criminals, though many originate from different lands, have escaped the executioner's axe. With the ferocity of a bear, these people fight tooth and nail for a chance at redemption.
