Surprises / Fate Duo

A Surprise Factor Roll (SF + 4dF) is triggered every time a – or + is rolled on the FSO. The - represents a negative surprise, the + a positive. If - - or ++ are rolled, roll twice. The Surprise Factor starts out at 0 and each Surprise Factor Roll that does not result in a surprise increases the factor by 1. Once a surprise occurs, the Surprise Factor is reset to 0. If the roll is equal to or greater than the Surprise Threshold then that level of surprise occurs. Surprise Threshold:
  • 2: Minor Surprise - Some minor things are not as they appear. Tweak the wording of one of the aspects to reflect the minor change.
  • 4: Moderate Surprise - The Scene takes a new direction. Change the wording of one or more of the Event Seed aspects to reflect a signficant change in the scene direction. Chasing a homeless guy who stole our supplies now becomes Chasing a homeless guy who is secretly a vampire.
  • 6: Major Surprise - The Adventure takes a new direction. It's also possible that the world, as the PC knows it, changes. You may modify the existing aspects or add a new aspect to reflect the change. Mr. X has been kidnapped to become the human battery for some ritual or Mr. X offers to pay the characters an incredible treasure and a very good reason to protect his life.
A Positive Surprise is one that does no harm directly to the PCs and could possibly help in some way. A Negative Surprise is an unfortunate turn of events.   Let's continue with our Yes + result from the Is it dangerous for the PCs to sleep outside at night? question.   Since this is our first surprise roll, the Surprise Factor is 0. We roll a +3, yielding a result of 3, which means a Minor Positive Surprise. The scene facilitator decides that mysterious mists come out at night and have random but (mostly) harmless effects at night for people who are "unprotected." They also wake up with visions and/or hangovers. Investigation determines that the mists are far more dangerous outside the city! All buildings built within the city are warded against the effects of these mists. However, the mists grant one free invoke to use in conjunction with them (such as Stealth or to create an advantage which could be tied to a useful vision).
