The Glacial City
A booming industry and mainstream pastime for the citizens of the Glacial City is astronomy.
Some folk have begun to explore the concept of astrology, which has gained momentum, both in lore and popularity. Those more practiced in astronomy and related fields, however, are of the opinion that astrology is a pseudoscience. Which sect is correct is entirely up to you.
Some of these astrophysicists and similarly trained folk are currently working to formulate an accurate algorithm for use in measuring time throughout the day.
Most of the local produce/flora originates from one of the seven enormous glasshouses based in the city. These are maintained by a vast and dedicated team of farmers, agriculturalists, horticulturalists, botanists and gardeners. They are considered scientific marvels, wondrous feats, and many of the local children have attended one or more of these glasshouses on a school-led excursion.
The city is frequently visited by silver or platinum dragons, who volunteer themselves for transport and courier services as required, as well as various consultancy roles, though the unspoken expectation is that they will be repaid with crystals, knowledge, or something of equal value. Aside from the dragons, however, the City is firmly isolated from the rest of society, maintaining trade relations solely through the help of their draconic friends.
Magic is commonplace in the Glacial City, which can make regulation of the economy and of social status somewhat difficult. The ruling family (Tayver House) have a system, however, which local law enforcement follows and upholds, to maintain order in the City.
Many citizens have pseudodragon familiars.
Demographics
Entire population is made up of high elves.
Government
Monarchy - Tayver House.
Underneath the Tayver House are five familes of varying power levels who have some level of influence over Tayver House's rule/decision making. They are somewhat reminiscent of 1600s French nobility in their arrogance, excess, and disconnect from the rest of the community. Thankfully they do not bend entirely to those vices.
The society is strongly patriarchal. Sons are heirs; women are used as bargaining chips - at least within the ruling families.
If no sons are produced in a generation, it is possible that said family may crumble under the associated chaos and pressure. This patriarchal approach is not spoken of or addressed at this time. It will, if left unchecked, eventually lead to the complete destruction of the City's inhabitants.
