Warforged

"Many people who are scared of those like me are usually basing their emotions on our looks or on stories that mothers use to scare their children to sleep."   "What if they're scared for another reason?" Bortil said   "And what reason would that be?"
— Anchor the Tanker, Warforged adventurer
The Warforged were first built to be intelligent constructs with the ability to learn. While the first were nearly mindless automatons, Palizador Spheros spent a vast amount of resources to improve his creations. After many years of research and toiling, him and his group of Artificers had finally made a breakthrough, producing sapient constructs. Warforged may be made of inorganic materials but they can still feel pain and emotion. Built to be soldiers and slaves, many of them now wander the lands searching for a new purpose.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Warforged are bipedal, humanoid constructs made up of a blend of organic and inorganic materials. Cords made of woven Magemesh and Hina Silk, filled with alchemical and magical fluids make up the inside of these beings acting as muscles and veins. A frame made of hearty Tudeskite ironwood supports armoured plates that form a protective outer shell and reinforces the joints. Most Warforged share a common facial design with a hinged jaw and crystalline eyes embedded underneath a reinforced brow ridge.   Other common traits include things such as:
  • Boot-like toeless feet
  • Model numbers that have since been scratched out
  • Plated human-like hands
  • Modular bodyparts
  • Small storage compartments in their forearms

  • Tall frames
  • The ability to make odd automaton noises
  • Metal teeth

Biological Traits

Elven Design

Many Warforged were constructed with their inventor, Palizidar Spheros, in mind and thus many are constructed to be Elf-like in appearance, though lacking the pointed ears. Even so, to appeal to a mass audience many were also made with other races in mind.

Construction Types

Human

Human-type Warforged were made with Human proportions in mind. These Warforged were slightly bulkier and shorter than their Elven-type cousins and were originally designed to appeal to the Humans of the land and to be one of the types to be used as frontline soldiers. Other uses that these types were designed for include dockers, crewpeople, and servants.

Elven

These lithe Warforged types were the first type to be constructed. Because of their thinner frames and smaller figures, these Warforged were to be used as hunters and gatherers, as well as scouts.

Dwarf

These wide and bulky Warforged, while small in stature, were built to survive harsh environments like underground mines and the tops of mountains much like actual Dwarves. These were to be used as miners, frontline soldiers, and explorers of particularly dangerous regions.

Goliath

These large hulking Warforge were made in the likeness of Xalvion's Goliaths. They were specifically made for offensive and defensive purposes both in wartimes and in day to day life.

Genetics and Reproduction

Warforged are sexless constructs and therefore cannot reproduce.

Growth Rate & Stages

Although Warforged do not grow physically over time as they are constructs, many go through stages of mental growth caused by their own thoughts or events in their life.

Stage 1

Warforged at this stage do not feel any emotion nor any pain. They act exactly how they were designed to act, intelligent but obedient and unfeeling. There are few Warforged who are still at this stage of growth.

Stage 2

At this stage, Warforged begin their first step towards sentience. This stage usually starts when a Warforged starts really taking in the environment around them and thinking about it on their own accord. This stage can also start when the Warforged goes through an emotional event such as someone actually calling them a friend or when one of their allies or friends pass away. The second example can actually be the thing that drives them to start thinking of their own accord and start gaining the form of sentience that Warforged have.

Stage 3

At this stage Warforged start developing their individuality. A Warforged at this stage might not start modifying themselves just yet but they might gain interests or doing more than just their job such as reading and writing or buying things they think they like at various shops. A Warforged at this stage might also try to start feeling real emotion by taking part in events that ellicit strong emotions such as fairs, funerals, comedic plays, and mass prayers.

Stage 4

Warforged at this stage have fully embraced individuality and sentience. They can feel emotion and pain just like anyone else and seek out Artificers to modifiy them to look how they want. Warforged at this stage tend to choose their own name if they dislike the one they were given or prefer another one. Warforged at this stage often also choose their gender identity. Warforged who identify as a woman tend to modify their bodies to look more feminine while those who identify as men tend to try and modify their body to look more muscular. Those who identify as Non-Binary tend to modify themselves to look more androgynous or stay with the default body they were made as.   At this point in their life the Warforged will often display an odd personality trait or two. The following table contains a few examples.

Warforged Quirks

Dietary Needs and Habits

Warforged are constructs and therefore do not need to eat or drink.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

If found by scavengers or other such people, Warforged who have passed away and have not been taken and/or buried by their allies are mostly used for scrap metal. Their insides usually become too weak to be useable after their passing, the crystals in their eyes are are usually found broken and if not, most would be able to identify the crystals former purpose thus making them nearly unsellable, and their wooden body parts are so specifically made that the best use for them would be as clubs or firewood.

Facial characteristics

Most Warforged share the same plated, nose and featureless, human-looking face. Each part of their head and face can be taken apart for inspection, modification, and repair.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Warforged, while mostly found in Macanhia, can be found in many places all across Xalvion with most being found in bigger cities.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Warforged were all assigned numerical designations at the time of their construction. Most chose to abandon these numbers and adopt nicknames, often given to them by their friends and allies. The more independent Warforged choose their own new names as a way to express themselves and their individuality. A few take on the names of those around them, with some being the name of a fallen friend or mentor.   Warforged Names: Anchor, Banner, Bastion, Blade, Blue, Bow, Cart, Church, Crunch, Crystal, Dagger, Dent, Five, Glaive, Hammer, Iron, Lucky, Mace, Oak, Onyx, Pants, Pierce, Red, Rod, Rusty, Scout, Seven, Shield, Slash, Smith, Spike, Temple, Vault, Wall.

Gender Ideals

While many Warforged tend to identify on either end of the gender spectrum, there are quite a many who chose to ignore the concept of it entirely.

History

In the year 1690 of the Arcane Era, Palizidar Spheros, an Elf Artificer from Macanhia began dabbling in the making of constructs with the sole purpose of making them smarter and able to learn unlike common golems and other automatons.   The first prototypes where rather successful albeit not as smart as he would have hoped and thus he continued his work hoping to make the breakthrough he wanted to.   In the year 1695, Palizidar had finally accomplished what he had set out to do, he created a construct that could speak, was intelligent, and most importantly, could learn. He learned quickly that he ended up achieving more than what he had hoped for.   By 1696, many Warforged started to display signs of sentience and individuality. Those who were soldiers became insubordinate and started disobeying commands they thought were wrong, dockers started to complain about growing tired after a long days work, and miners objected to working and started strikes as they had realized their working environments were far too dangerous. It was at this point that Palizadar realized that the Warforged he and his Artificers made were becoming much smarter than they had originally intended.   In 1696, Warforged were finally declared a sentient people and laws were made in most civilized parts of the world that declared it to be illegal to own a Warforged individual. On top of this, it was made illegal to make more Warforged as the ethics of the act were quite complex.

Common Myths and Legends

  • Warforged don't feel anything: While this is technically true for a small portion of the Warforged population, the majority of Warforged have achieved sentience and can feel emotion and pain, both physical and mental.
  • Warforged are just machines: While they are constructs they are still living humanoids. Resting, healing magic, and the Medicine skill all work on a Warforged just as they would with any other humanoid.

Average Weight
270 lbs
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
While Warforged as a whole don't display any special markings besides the defunct model numbers, some choose to paint or mark parts of their body's for various reasons. Unless previously painted for utility reasons, Warforged who have not painted or marked themselves in any way have a plain look about them as they are just the colours of the materials they are made of.

Military

Warforged employed by military or similar forces tend to paint or engrave the crest of whatever country or organization they serve onto themselves similar to how soldiers of kingdoms wear armour emblazoned with the crest of their nation do. Funnily enough, since the bodies of Warforged are their armour, this is rather fitting.

Religious

While most Warforged have no interest in religion, those who are tend to paint or engrave their bodies with the symbol of their chosen patrons.

Cosmetic

Many Warforged who have developed and embraced their individuality tend to modify and customize the various parts of their body with different colours and markings and designs while some choose to change a part of their body completely to further this individuality. Warforged who do this either seek out Artificers or if they are capable, do it themselves.

Cultural

Warforged who develop a strong bond with their home and its people tend to integrate themselves with the locals and paint and mark their bodies similarly to them if the people tend to do this as well. Warforged like this also tend to have the crest of their home painted or engraved onto them similar to Warforged in military services. Warforged like this, who do not wear clothing, will tend to mark their body in the latest cultural fashions to match those around them.
