Family Blanket

Born out of necessity as protection from the cold winters of the Northern Isles, a family blanket is a cherished item amongst the northern people. Consisting of a thick blanket made of the furs of various animals, family blankets are typically so large that they can cover the entire floor area of an igloo or tent. Families typically have two family blankets, with one serving as a floor mat and the other as a blanket for the entire family to crawl under for sleeping.    Care and maintenance of the blankets are the responsibility of the entire family, with generation after generation mending and patching the same blanket. This continual maintenance of these blankets result in a hodpodge pattern, with each blanket being unique as each weaver adds their own style to it.
