Dark Rock

On a small island off the coast of the Northern Isles lies the most secure prison in Estalia. Typically reserved for those who commit severe crimes against the state, Black Stone is believed to be inescapable. The island itself is barren rock, surrounded by the cold, rough waters of the north Brightwater and The Maw. As well, the island becomes surrounded by a thick layer of sea ice for much of the year, in addition to being blanketed by blizzards and storms. Visitors to the island are strictly prohibited - not that any are planning vacations there.   The prison itself is a dark, squat structure. Much of it is buried underground, to take advantage of the natural heat, however, one large tower rises over the structure, serving as lighthouse, sentry post, and access when the snow gets too deep.   Prisoners at Black Stone work in a large, underground mine snaking underneath the island. Built on top of a large kimberlite pipe, the volcanic rock underneath is rich with diamonds. Although the work is hard, the workers are treated fairly, with many of them almost enjoying the work, as the grounds warmth is more pleasant than the cold winds above. Guards posted there are careful to inspect each prisoner after work, to make sure that they're not squirelling away any weapons or riches. The mined diamonds are stored in a large vault, until the treasure ships from the mainland can get to the island during the summers.   Although there is an appeal process, very few people leave Black Stone, as the severity of their crimes typically require a complete and quantitative change in beliefs before being allowed to leave - such as renouncements of fundamental beliefs.
