Historical Overview
Origins
As
Vestria's Grounds are protected by Anhara's
Forest Law, access and use of the forest is highly restricted. However, as the Grounds proper are a sacred space, it would be inappropriate for the Rangers normally designated under the law to keep the peace. Thus, the
College of Vestrial Priestesses took the responsibility upon themselves, and designated the Vestrial Temena to guard the Grounds.
Duties
The primary duty of the Vestrial Temena is the protection of the sacred grove. As common knowledge of Vestria's Grounds is so closely intertwined with the
Haruspex Festival, the famed alcohol of
Saisson Brewing and the festive attitude of
Honeymill often put visitors in close proximity to temptation. While most are turned away before given a chance to approach too far down the
Haruspal Way, the Temena handles those unfortunate few who make it to the Grounds.
Selection
Much of the legend around the Temena focuses on the selection process. When a Temena dies peacefully, the High Priestess simply appoints a successor qualified in those martial aspects crucial to their duties. However, the more interesting and well-known aspect is if a Temena dies in combat. A successful challenger finds themselves on the first step towards succeeding the prior Temena, and takes their place after a handful of trials.
The trials a victor goes through are an aspect often set aside by popular mythology, and challenging the Vestrial Temena has become a dangerous pastime for youthful adventurers seeking quick fame.
