Yumaly

The old name of Ondinia. Most of the ethnic Yumalyan population in Lingguo still calls it by this name, especially refugees from the war.   Yumaly is situated on more mountainous lands, the flatter areas being valleys situated near rivers, steppes, or the area of Yumaly that touches the sea.

Culture

Great emphasis is placed on the sky and mountains in traditional Yumalyan culture. The mountains are regarded as living creatures in their own rights. Wind is perceived as nature spirits. Certain animals, such as goats and birds of prey, are revered. A Yumalyan method of fortune telling is tying up countless multicolored cloth, observing how the wind blows it around, and drawing conclusions.

Cuisine

Populations are either pastoral nomads or subsist on agriculture grown by the rivers and sea. Most produce are eaten uncooked, the rest being pickled or stored in containers to ensure a long shelf life after the short farming season.   Nomadic/Mountainous Yumalyan cuisine consists of wheat, mutton, goat, horse, and pickled greens (potatoes, onions, carrots). Stews and soups are common, as are wheat noodles and flatbreads. Valley Yumalyans have more greens in their diet, with some seafood caught from nearby rivers. They’re also more likely to have pork, beef, and chicken in their diet. Both also may have dumpling or dumpling adjacent foods. A national snack and treat food is mantou buns.
