German Third Army in trouble

German Third Army headquarters reports trouble. Intelligence failures abound.

The German Third Army, of which the 5th U.S. Infantry Division is a part by virtue of its membership in the U.S. XI Corps, radios that they are under heavy attack by the 1st Polish Tank Army near Piła and that Toruń has been overrun by the Soviet 22nd Cavalry Army, thought to be in Belarus.   5th Division command holds a strategy conference with his Brigade commanders in the afternoon and they decide their best course of action is to break through Łódź, push south to Piotrków Trybunalski, and then east to Radom. Such a maneuver would avoid the largest concentrations of encircling troops and allow the 5th Division to inflict maximum damage on the 22nd Cavalry Army's lines of communication. It would also position the division to rotate north and try to link up with friendly units on the Baltic coast.   With the plan developed, the 256th Brigade begins a shift to Szadek while 1st Brigade takes over their position at Ozorków.
