Withdrawal

2000
15/7

The division tries to withdraw and consolidate, but Pact forces have other plans.

1st Brigade begins its withdrawal at dawn but is hit by the Soviet 20th Tank Division as they make for Uniejów. By afternoon, the Soviets had lost more than a dozen tanks and been driven back with heavy losses. At Kutno, north of Łódź, the 3-11 Infantry is overrun.   By nightfall, 1st Brigade is a shell of its former strength. When they reach Uniejów, the weary brigade discovers that the bridge over the Warta has been blown. The 7th Engineer Battalion begins rebuilding it by torchlight while the rest of the Brigade settle into defensive positions.   South, the 256th Brigade has been stuck in Łask all day for want of fuel. 4-12 Cavalry does pull back to secure Sieradz and the bridge there.   2nd Brigade, with 3-143 Infantry holding Konin and 3-77 Armored holding Koło, sends the 1-40 Armored, its last remaining battalion, south to Kalisz to secure the divisional rear.
