The attack on Łódź

2000
10/7

The division commences an attack on Łódź and immediately runs into trouble.

The 3-11 Infantry of 1st Brigade are ordered to move out of Kutno to the east, through Łowicz, to attack Łódź from the northeast. Simultaneously, the 256th Mechanized Brigade at Ozorków is ordered to detach a battalion south to Uniejów to reinforce the 4-12 Cavalry.   Troops of the 3-11 are barely clear of their positions when they run into advancing mounted troops in far superior numbers. They fall back into their just-abandoned positions at Kutno under heavy pressure but for the moment, hold the line. By nightfall, they've determined that they're facing elements of the Soviet 89th Cavalry Division, last known to be in Belarus. This is a shocking intelligence failure.   This same day, the 4-12 Cavalry are able to determine that they're facing the Polish 11th Border Guard Brigade, formerly at Lublin.
