Decanus

A Decanus is the lowest-ranking officer in the majority of the Eschen Military. They lead a Decade, which is ten men. The Decade is the smallest unit in the Eschien armed forces.

Qualifications

Decanus receive the same training as all other members of the armed forces, and are working members of their Decade. Additionally, once a Decanus is appointed, they receive additional training with the other Decanus throughout their career.

Requirements

The Decanus is often, though not always, the most experienced person or best fighter in the Decade. However, those are not the most important qualities - they must possess the ability to lead and inspire their nine men.

Appointment

A Decanus is appointed by the officers above them - possibly the Centurian, Captain, or City Marshall, or possibly the unit's Optinus or Tertanus, depending on how many Decades are in the group. There is a promotion ceremony for new Decanus, performed by their commander in front of their Decade.

Duties

The duties of the Decanus are many. They are their Decade's first point of contact for all things great and small. They are responsible for training, morale, discipline, and unit cohesiveness.

Benefits

Most Decanus would tell you there isn't much of a benefit to their rank. The job comes mostly with responsibilities, not perks. There is a small salary uptick for Decanus over the rest of the men and women in the Decade, and it is the first step to climing the rank ladder if they have ambitions.

Accoutrements & Equipment

On their dress uniform, the Decanus wears Decade insignia that is slightly different than the other nine men. Instead of a border with ten black dots, their Decade patch has nine black stars and a gold star. This motif is repeated across the training fatigues and other gear - the nine black and one gold stars in a circle when possible; different variations of nine black and one gold stripes where it isn't.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A Decanus can leave their position when they retire, are promoted, or are removed for bad conduct or failure to perform. Anyone in the chain of command can recommend dismissal of a Decanus, but only the Imperial Commander of each branch can make the final call.
