Halflings

Oddly, halflings have gone from a fairly minor race on Plumo to the fifth most populous in a matter of just three hundred years. It’s difficult to explain their success. They seem to come out of nowhere at all and start-up townships, particularly on the islands and in the woodlands of the eastern continent. There’s a particularly heavy concentration of them near Serpent Isle. And the younger ones often seem to be clueless about the history and traditions of Plumo. It’s like they just appeared out of the shadows and this was their first day on a new planet…   Nevertheless, halflings have been at the forefront of land and sea exploration for several generations now. It is said that if you want to find something new, a halfling should lead the way. Their boundless curiosity and steadfast practicality give them the right mix of drive and survivability. As long as one checks their pockets often, a trip with a halfling can be quite profitable.   With gnomes falling out of ascendance and elves shrinking from modern civilization, halflings have taken over the role of information brokers in many places. It isn’t unusual to find halfling guild masters, tavern owners, and neighborhood watch supervisors. They put themselves in positions where they can keep an ear to the ground and broker jobs, bounties, and quests as needed.   Other than local businesses, most halflings have no interest in leadership or politics. Many actively avoid such things, even when offered. It’s almost like they have a secret that they’re keeping. Rumors that many of them hail from another plane of existence crop up once in a while, but that’s just silly. Isn’t it?
