Yggdrasil Termites (Also known as the The Termite(s) Of Yggdrasil or White Ants) are large cockroaches that roam on the massive branches of Yggdrasil. Although they consume the rotting wood and leaves on the great tree voraciously, they ultimately act in the interest of Yggdrasil itself, having formed a symbiotic relationship with it.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Their physical bodies are made up of a mixture of Mana, chitin, water, and the bark of Yggdrasil itself. This mixture of materials allows for a Yggdrasil Termite to have a tough shell, which makes it hard to even attempt to damage. They've got six legs, which are composed of four parts and, at the bottom of their feet, they have small claws that allow for them to grasp onto surfaces with ease. These claws are made up of shards of Edenite that are embedded into the chitin of their bodies, growing out from the flesh as they age.

Their bodies are composed of three parts: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. Although the head and thorax resemble that of an ordinary termite, the abdomen of a Termite is special, for it is exposed on it's underside with it's stomach visible, covered up by a thin, nearly-transparent membrane: a miniature black hole, of which everything it eats is fed into it. How it obtains nutrients from this black hole is unknown, as well as how it's able to sustain a black hole within it's body without being consumed. If a Yggdrasil Termite is killed or if the membrane is punctured, the black hole immediately vanishes.

Genetics and Reproduction

Although rare, when Yggdrasil Termites needs to reproduce, it will seek out a shard of crystalized Resolve and consume it. When this happens, the black hole in the termite will immediately vanish, which triggers the termite into burrowing itself deep into the Yggdrasil tree, where it will begin producing hundreds of eggs that can take anywhere from a decade to a hundred years to hatch, gestating them where the black hole once was before laying them against the walls inside the hole it created.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They consume the deceased rot of the tree that occasionally can be found along it, especially around the branches of dying realms. The massive size of the tree as well as it's seemingly endless structure means that there is always plenty of rot to be found along it, and as such, there is no risk to the tree's structural integrity. The Yggdrasil Termites have fed off of the tree since the dawn of time, and it is a process that will likely continue on for millennia.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Yggdrasil Termites act in perfect coordination with each other, organized in their movements and selections of where to consume the rot of the Yggdrasil Tree and where to burrow to reproduce. Often times, researchers have found that Yggdrasil Termites, when they see one of them begin to eat at the rot, the rest of them will quickly start to join in along with them. Otherwise, they just wander the tree continuously, going up and down it's bark until they stumble upon rot.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They are effectively blind, relying on their two sets of antenna to allow for them to sense things around them. Their antenna are not only sensitive to sound-- allowing them to distinguish between the loudness or softness of a noise, they're able to sense the vibrational movements of things, such as the sensation of feet walking along the massive branches of Yggdrasil or the subtle creaks of the tree's limbs.

I'm not usually a fan of termites but your worldbuilding is stellar!

Right off you had me with the concept. Termites but they are 'termites' that would live within and eat of Yggdrasil. That one blurb off the jump is a wild premise, but you absolutely deliver. They feel familiar but then absolutely out there with things like black hole's for stomachs?? The sheer amount of crazy questions that this creates in world, I love it and I love you acknowledge that, because if I was any sort of naturalist in the Withered World's these things would become an obsession. I simply would NEED to figure out how the hell that works. I couldn't let it go, its just too crazy, I would need to understand.   Well written my friend :D

These are fun. I like the idea of termites being helpful because they get rid of the rot.   And black holes? Wild.
