The World Below the Waves
Humans are always looking for a place better than the one they already have. When first ships went exploring into the oceans, it was because of their captain's dreams and hopes. Dreams that they find a better place to live, and hopes that they manage to claim that place for themselves. Or its treasures at any rate. Now, there were plenty of treasures to find in the New World. But not enough to satisfy everyone's greed, no cities made of gold or anything like that. Stories of immense wealth hidden in the New World became less popular, and sailors came up with a new story - of a world lost to the ocean long ago, of underwater ruins filled with treasure or continents just below the waves with entire countries still standing intact.
Summary
If you read the old tales and legends about New World from two or three centuries ago, you will immediately notice the similarity. Many of the stories about the Underwater World (as is its other name) are really just old stories in a new scenery, hidden on the bottom of the ocean. Often times they make little sense as people and animals are able to walk and live in the Underwater World just the same as they do in ours. Frankly, that is just lazy retelling if you ask me.
Also, how do people even get to the Underwater World? Most stories I have found started with a ship being sunk by storms or pirates, its crew thrown overboard and ending up in those mythical cities. But how come they do not drown? How do they make it out with all the plundered gold from the stories, and who tells the stories if half the time the main characters decide to stay in the Underwater World? Clearly, these stories were made up by sailors and not writers - way too many plot holes otherwise.
Historical Basis
Now, in my research I did stumble upon a few more interesting stories. By that I mean stories that actually make sense, and could have a plausible explanation. We already know that the ocean is ever-changing, whole islands appearing and disappearing as time goes by. So it stands to reason that there must be some islands, probably inhabited by local Vurradian tribes, that have perished in the ocean before. Perhaps, some of them lay close enough to the water surface to be found?
