Sol Meridia District Zero

The world's marketplace. Both worlds, actually.
If people know anything of how Sol Meridia is run, it is two things: the Benevolent council and its unique system of fairly autonomous districts. District Zero combines the two concepts into one. As capital of Sol Meridia and the richest place in perhaps all of New World, District Zero is administered directly by the Benevolent Council and is where most of the Council members reside along with their families.   As should be expected of such a place, it is expensive. Very expensive. Not many can afford to live in District Zero, and it is populated heavily by merchants and skilled craftsmen from all corners of the world. Which, given the Sol Meridia's status as crossroad of most trade between New World and Old World, shaped the district in very particular ways.

Government

The district's historic privilege of being subordinate directly to the Benevolent Council is a constant source of both trouble and riches alike. On one hand, all the fiercest arguments on business deals and zoning regulations end up landing in front of the Council. On the other hand, the litigating parties tend to be very generous to those councillors who are willing to pay attention to their troubles. Which is, in my opinion, why many people bid fervently for a seat on the Benevolent Council to begin with.

Industry & Trade

So you are a merchant and you either live in District Zero or have a shop there. Given the high property costs, you need high revenues to make the venture worthwile. That means two options: either selling very expensive products or selling a lot of them.   The first of these options is what the district is really famous for. If you want to buy something, anything, odds are it can be easily found in District Zero's many marketplaces. Meanwhile, the second option gets largely eclipsed by the first yet is much more significant than flashy trinkets and fancy clothes. Despite being by far the smallest district on Sol Meridia, District Zero accounts for a lion's share of products sold across the whole island. Not physically of course, but some of the deals signed there are truly enormous in magnitude.
