Sanctuary Island
A rare proof of the fact that we humans can indeed cooperate with each other, when it is in the interests of all. Too bad it almost never is.Even after centuries of exploration and four Waves of Colonisation, travelling from the Old World to the New World is no easy task. The trip takes weeks but at times turns to months, as treacherous waves and unpedictable winds blow ships off course or strand them in the middle of nowhere. These are the times when sailors search for the Sanctuary Island. There is nothing special about the island itself. Or its people, or its settlements. Anything really. The only thing special is how conveniently it is located, being the only major (known) island for days on end. You can get to the New World using other routes, they are just nowhere near as convenient as this one. So all sailors know how to find the Sanctuary Island, and any ship is welcomed to enter and leave as it wishes regardless of whatever wars are raging around.
History
It was not always this way. Historically, the Sanctuary Island has been one of Eire's most prized possessions. Ever since other nations turned their eyes towards the New World, a strong Eirish garrison protected the island due to its strategic importance. And merchants tended to get gouged mercelessly on supply prices in order to pay that garrison.
Things changed as clashes have began occuring around the island, threatening not only the Eirish dominance over it - more importantly - the Eirish trade routes as well. The Sanctuary Island is too important to be left unguarded but too close to the shores of Ordonia to be properly protected. In the end, an agreement was signed that declared the Sanctuary Island a sort of "neutral zone". Under the authority of Kingdom of Eire still, but with strict rules on how much it can abuse that authority.
