Game Masters
You want to spend a pleasant evening playing dice - you go to a tavern. You want to make money gambling - you get an invite to a fancy ball or horse racing. You want to be the best player in the world...you challenge the Game Masters.Nothing new about a group of people who want to have some exclusivity in who they play cards with. Or dice, or bet on horses - you get what I mean. You often need either money, status or both to be invited to certain circles. But for some, it is more about the game itself than the gambling it is normally accompanied by. Game Masters are supposedly the best players in the world, and very secretive ones too. Their skills have already earned fortunes and power for the group's members, as did they gain some powerful enemies. Now the Game Masters come together in order to find out who could really claim the title of the best in each particular game. From what I have heard, they do not allow any form of gambling as it "taints" the game.
Structure
I will prelude the following by saying that all of it is highly hypothetical and based on some very conflicting sources. Overall it seems there are a few dozen members of the Game Masters, but it is hard to tell as they maintain a high degree of anonymity. It seems there are no membership requirements aside from one's skill in a particular game, so nobles and commoners alike may cross their paths in the Game Masters meetings.
For each popular game, there are separate rankings of all members based on their success playing against other members. The best player at a time claims a title of Grandmaster, and there are seven different Grandmasters for seven different games. It is entirely possible to hold several Grandmaster titles at once, and the person with most titles is the Game Sage presiding over the overall group. How a Sage is chosen in case of a tie - now that is very much unclear to this day.
