First King
The first of all Eirish kings. What is there to explain? It can be quite confusing to hear things like "Twenty Third First King of Eire". So is he twenty third or first? The answer is both, as First King is actually a heritable title. The "First" part meaning the first of all Eirish royal lineages. Again, not quite literally. The original bloodline has long died out, albeit the current First King still has some of that blood in his veins through one of royal princesses of old. By its founding accord, the king of Rosewater Shores - the largest and most powerful of all Eirish islands - is also the First King of Eire. First among equals, so it goes. Or at least so think the other eight kings of Eire.
Appointment
The matter of inheritance of the First King title is inevitably tied to that of Rosewater Shores. The founding accords are clear on this topic, as "The King who rules over Rosewater Shores is to be named the First King".
That has actually created significant conflict when the first royal dynasty ended without a suitable male heir, as every king raced to claim dominion over Rosewater Shores in a bid for the now-vacant title. Not that any of them succeeded, as people of Rosewater Shores have always banded together in order to support a local family instead. One of their biggest topics of pride really.
Responsibilities
The First King has actually quite little to do in this capacity. The Kingdom of Eire is very much a decentralised condeferation of islands, with nine major islands of the Wellimbrook Archipelago each ruled by its own king. There is a set of laws written for all Eirish to abide by, but those are decided on by all nine kings together. For the most part the First King is busy ruling his own island, while occassionaly receiving foreign envoys or acting as arbiter and judge in conflicts between different Eirish islands.
The one area where the First King has been granted full control is the matter of lands beyond the Wellimbrook Archipelago. Not surprising at all, given that none of those lands were discovered back when the Kingdom of Eire was founded. Still, the active colonisation policy persued by the Eirish over the past centuries has given the First King a chance to gain much wealth and authority over the rest of his fellow kings. So much that some wonder if the First King might be set on becoming an emperor in his own right.
