Purifying salt
Even though the apocalypse came and The Curtain fell, thanks to the merging of the material and conceptual (spiritual) world, finding food never became a problem. As long as a location was strongly related to food, it was possible to find it there. However, while the food might be there, its edibility or safety to consume might vary should some spirits attach themselves to it. Because of that, various ways of purifying the food were researched and used, the most common being salt.
Most of these techniques, salt included, don't have any basis in science other than the shared belief of the people that they work. Similarly, purifying food with blessed water, praying over it, attaching various symbols and talismans might work with the same efficiency. It's just that the salt is quite common to find and already enhances the taste of the dishes, so it has become a staple condiment.
And now, with a few sprinkles of it, one can get rid of spirit seeds, eggs, and parasites that hide themselves within most of the meals. Only particularly nasty spirits are capable of hiding and protecting themselves within such food, though those won't survive being carried through most of the stronger protective seals and barriers. And compared to them, spiritual spores might survive that.
If there actually is any spiritual presence within the food, sprinkling it with salt produces a sizzling sound. There is no set amount of salt needed, with some spirits requiring quite a lot of it; otherwise, they might detach themselves from the dish, and some of them might not be happy with how they were treated. There's no need to worry about the taste of the dish as the salt needed to purify the spirit will be consumed in the process, leaving the food unspoiled.
