City in the Clouds

The City in the Clouds is a floating island city over the lake between Warsu and Osarian Empire. At the current time, only Air Genasi and Aarakocra seem to have made their homes in the ruins. While some attempts have been made to reach the city, most have ended in devastation as the height and the wind current around the city keeps it isolated from most that are not of the skies.

Geography

The City in the Clouds is a city of ruins. The city rest about 42,000 miles above sea level, deep within the jet stream. Do it resting in the jet stream, approaching the city is difficult and unpredictable. Often druids focused on weather or Air Genasi are required to navigate it. Many of the winged folk do learn to predict and manipulate the winds, but this is a deep and close-held tradition that only air genasi are able to even mention. Often, people who have made it to the city describe a sense of weightlessness or at least being lighter than they were on the ground.    The City also has greatly fluctuating weather. In the day, it is cold and windy, but manageable to most living creatures. The weather gets harsh and unforgivable once the sun goes down. It often falls around -33 degrees Fahrenheit, if not more. This happens regardless of the weather below.

Localized Phenomena

Most people have a hard time seeing the city but a telltale sign of its location is to find the local Kenku and watch where they look up in thought. That direction is where the city floats. Kenku are often drawn to the city but unable to reach it. To them, the city in a tangible representation of their longing to fly.   The City in the Clouds is considered a highly saturated, magical area. Because of this, magical artifacts and spells are limited here as anything could cause massive damage to the city and the land below. That being said, it does seem to have its own magical effects. There is a lower gravity on the City of the Clouds. This allows people to feel lighter and to jump slightly more than normal.

History

The City in the Clouds history has long been forgotten. No one is quite sure how it got up there or why. The local theory is that it once was on the surface like everything else. The rest of the history is told through verbal fairytales. These stories often tell of a Utopian city made of gold and metal. All walks of life lived within the city. Even the secluded Firbolg folks and the prideful protectors Triton assisted the city with its growth. The city was able to make magnificent strides in all walks of life, including weapons, architecture, and transportation. In the times the city existed, it would have outshone everyone else as it was ahead of its time.    Though, the children's tales of the city are vague and varying on what sent into the sky. A common version tells of the city having played god one too many times and flown much too close to the son. In retaliation, the gods thrust the city into the sky. In other versions, the city people had created an invention that backfired and resulted in its current state. Regardless of how or why the tales always finish the same way with the city residing in the sky. It is a story of warning and caution and not of delight and wonder like what the city once represented.    Of the folk that has reached the city, they describe the place to be empty and lifeless. It is as if looking at a corpse. The city's current state is ruined. Marvelous machines rest in pieces, rusted and decaying. Gorgeous buildings are slowly being chipped away by nature. The written history lost to time, taken by the wind and sky. Even the beautiful art that should have had stories on them has decayed with time. Even if the city still contained its story, their language has long been forgotten.
